1980 ish, played my Viola in my tuxedo with colleagues for some Private party/campaign fund raiser in Snottsdale, Aridzona where Mister Knowitall here was an honored guest. So what! Of all the Rich and famous I played for very, very few made it known they did not want the strolling string players near them; one was Bill Buckley the other was now convicted felon and former Arizona Guv'nr Fife Simington! Snottsdale hosts the richest bad people on Earth.
Kerouac is clearly the biggest hippie of all of them. Also the kid playing as a "hippie" doesn't appear to know what he's talking about. People keep blaming each other rather than themselves for society's problems.
W.F. Buckley, the most square, and therefore hilarious, intro to the hippies ever - - : "Uh, the topic tonight is... the hippies...An understanding of whom we must I guess acquire, or die painfully."
Buckley seems to be high on some strong painkillers, Kerouac is completely wasted, Sanders seems to be on a LSD trip and Yablonsky looks like an undercover agent about to arrest all those druggies around him. Its so bizarre yet very interesting.
Sad to see Kerouac like this. But, it is what it is, and maybe it's instructive too. Watch him on the Steve Allen show for a real glimpse at his genius. Or better yet, read On the Road or Dharma Bums. Someone once said that a nihilist is a broken down and defeated idealist. That's what we see here, months before Kerouac's death from the alcoholism that has clearly overcome him in this clip. I prefer to remember him by the beatitudes in the literary works. Really beautiful stuff.
This is painful, but you were warned: 😂 "A 1968 episode of William F. Buckley's Firing Line, featuring a drunken Jack Kerouac, the Fug's Ed Sanders and a clueless academic, Lewis Yablonsky, discussing the "Hippie" movement."
But they over explain the idea too often! It is not necessary to explain your culture to the world. Telling your story and your experiences in the subject culture is always powerful and interesting. Keep it quick but tell more stories about your experiences. ONLY: If you want to and someone asks you/shares one of their own... consent ppl. Consent is Sexy!
The era of the 1960's witness a generation of young adults who came into large media coverage, in a time of affluence in the Americas. As a whole generation, as any generation, they cannot be defined in any simple way. These times, of which I was on the ending cusp, using the term 'being hep' related to jazz music and culture in general, became the sexist term 'hippie, as in 'hip'. The exploitation of a generation, rich in talent and beauty, was pushed into pornography and drug dealing by nefarious elements within the generation, but mainly by an older generation in control of capitol, and older people who were envious and hateful of youth. The lasting values are in the many great creative arts, as young people had more chances for exposure than previous ones, particularly in music, but also in drama and painting. That is how I see it.
We caught one of his solo gigs in Los Angeles in the late 70s Spellbinding My friend got escorted out for being too drunk And yelling Nirvana For Mice 🐁 at him. Slightly embarrassing
Lost opportunity to have Kerouac as the sole guest and talk about something other than the hippie movement. The control freak Buckley playing by his rules.
