Do y’all run an ambulance or a just a rescue unit? Transporting and being held up at hospitals etc extends call times. Just curious if you are doing 20 calls and transporting. I work a 24/48 paramedic ambulance service not fire. I hate the schedule. Rural station runs 4-8 calls a shift but 2-3 hour call times. Split station on who wants to trial 48s.
Thanks for the question! At my department we run both fire and EMS. We have 10 stations with 7 MICUs. Call volume is different at each station but we do have a couple of stations that will run 30 calls in a 48 hr. tour. Our normal turn around time for an EMS call is about a hour. We are lucky to have two large hospitals in our city so our transport times are not too long.
I did 10's/14's when I got home, I used to be junk on the 2nd night and was going on 4 off. We went to 24's, 1/2/1/4 schedule. Much better rested this schedule. Neighbor across from me does 24's 1/1/1/5, no thanks. That day off after first 24 is kind of a waste IMO but yeah, 5 days off. I know a dept that does 1/3/1/3 schedule 24's and 1/3/1/3 24's that start at 6p. 48's are rough and I loathe them but overtime is nice. I don't sleep good at the station, always hearing the other guys go out in the other stations, I look forward to heart friendly station alerting where I don't have to listen to anything except my own.
In my area the ambulance is part of the tax payer funded fire dept. yet when people call for an ambulance they’re charged almost a grand…. That’s why a lot of people refuse.
I’m working to become a firefighter in EMT class this month. Love the idea of a 48/96 schedule. Four days off at a time seems perfect. How many firefighters go out of town on their 96 off? That’s definitely how’d I’d like to spend it as long as I get enough rest.
I live in Uptown Dallas (affluent area in the heart of Dallas) and we’ve had an increase of many potential kidnappings of younger girls (20’s and 30’s) over the last two years. At gas stations, groceries and simply walking. I have to walk with my mace at all times.
It's an unfortunate reality and part of the reason we are bringing awareness to an issue that doesn't always get due attention. Thanks for watching and stay safe out there.
