This match was the beginning of one of most nice rivality of the history of the female tennis. Wonderful Graf and amazing Seles that was only 15 years old.
Never liked Monica when she played - the grunt got to me. But hindsight is 20/20 and she’s awesome. But I’m still loyal to Graf - the epitome of grace and focus - best in the world for a decade ❤❤❤
The movements, the hitting the ball is sooo much different then how the guys look now these two look like amateurs by their maneuvers compared to todays standards
Bjorn Borg won three Channel slams 1978 1979 and 1980 it will never be duplicated because the clay was so slow and the grass was so fast and he did it all within a 2-week period. Goat 🐐
It is so wrong what all of the players did to Monica during this tournament....Martina included. Grunting hinderance? Jimmy Connors had been grunting much louder for over two decades. I do not remember a single comment about his noise level.
Even though I love her so much that I started tennis on the wall by watching her videos, playing in the same style as her without taking any lessons, learning, achieving success, winning tournaments and becoming a tennis instructor, I owe it to Seles, but I still do not accept that she did not say any words to praise her rivals while shaking hands in front of the net at the end of the match and at such trophy ceremonies, she could have been a more sincere and sincere person in these parts, and in the stabbing incident, her rivals probably said no from these actions in the vote for the right to stay at world number 1.
Martina serving 0-30 at 4-3 and Chris had a short ball and had the whole court but hit it wide . She then Hit a forehand pass at 30-30 to give Martina 5-3. That was the match. Chris had a chance when Martina served 5-4 15-40. Chris had 3 chances to pull even in second set but no chance in third set .
Unfortunately the final was marred by the grunting controversy and a distracted Seles couldn't play the same aggressive game that she exhibited in the SF against Navratilova. Otherwise we'd be looking at a classic 3-set final instead of a lopsided one. Interestingly, after this final Monica's grunting never became an issue again
Seles became distracted by the grunting controversy during her semi w Navratilova and the grunting threatened to overshadow the final. On the eve of the final Monica discussed w her dad and they decided to muffle the grunting for the final. Problem was Monica became so distracted by quieting her grunting that it took her mind off the match. You can tell even before the first set is over Monica knew she couldn't play and fight the grunting at the same time despite playing so brilliantly against Martina in the SF. Her classiness is evident during the trophy presentation
You should have included Jimmy hugging his young son Brett at the end of the match - a moment I witnessed live on TV and will never forget. But thanks for posting.
