as an AJR hater, in short, having ears. But in long its the fact that all their lyrics are either 1. Jack complaining about his life or 2. Songs about songs such as Beats, No Grass today and THree-Thirty where all the lyrics are "We're a band and we're singing a song, song song song" and its like who wants to listen to that? it's boring. See if you can find a single AJR song that doesn't mention 1 of these 3 things: -Their Parents - "my friends" -the fact they're a band singing a song.
Look, I am a producer and audio engineer, and artist myself. For going on 20 years. That does not make my opinion gospel, far from it, but the ideas the come up with are truly genius. Their ability to execute on these ideas is amazing. Their production and super solid engineering is in a another league. To call them pop punk with an album like neo theatre is just silly. That reductionist approach is what I do to make fun of football - grown men playing f*cking tag for millions of dollars. We can make anything sound dumb with the right joke. AJR might actually be too complex for some people. And here comes those people picking their dumbest lines in an effort to refute what I just said. But that, again, is stupid people cherry picking.
Had no idea they were hated, over the last year I've really grown to love them! Not to mention the concert I went to a few weeks back was one of the most entertaining shows I'd ever seen. People are weird.
Everyone can have their own opinions, but when you start commenting threats, telling people to end their lives, insulting their personal life? That's when things get out of hand. I've seen at least 10 of those in each "newer" comment section.
Ajr pretends to be super edgy and unique. They're basically just another glass animals or half alive. Not really that interesting and they're also pretty annoying
While obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, AJR will always hold a special place in my heart as being one of the first bands I was able to organically come to the conclusion are objectively sort of bad-As someone who has always naturally been drawn to measuring art in terms of objective & structured, explainable “quality”, this band has always fascinated me. In my humble opinion, the reason why you can argue that they’re objectively bad is because enjoying them requires very little effort from the listener. Most of their songs (that I’ve had the pleasure of hearing) are very over-produced which makes for an extremely ear-grabbing-comparable to “click-bait-y”-sound, similar to how processed food tastes good simply because of the manufactured ingredients to make it scientifically taste good. The lyrical content and delivery are also similar, whereby most of their songs paint a picture of a feeling that virtually every single human being has experienced or is currently experiencing, leaving little to no room for abstraction or personal interpretation. On a more personal note, I shudder whenever I hear a song of theirs with that one pivotal, mic-drop-type of line that you KNOW they wrote just so people could hear it and collectively all go like “OHHH MY GODDD YESSSSSS that is me!!!” Moments like that just don’t feel earned. So I do understand the appeal of the band, I really do, but like I said I think that there’s a LOT to argue in regard to them just being a bad band. You can like whatever you want but if you’re wanting to view music with a critical eye, I feel like AJR is almost like the first step, where you really do have to acknowledge that they’re not “quality” music in the way that critics are trying to find quality music. You can listen to them all day but you have to recognize that, which is why they get so much hate.
I adore AJR, they make the unheard and unseen feel like they have music for themselves. Some people don’t want others to feel like even though they are different it’s okay, they want everyone to be the same.
I don't not like them for their message. Their message is fine. One of my favorite bands ever has similar sentiments. I just don't like AJR because they sound like every other mainstream pop band. Their compositions are very unremarkable to me. But that's just my opinion. My music taste is incredibly broad and tends to favor more unique sounds. Almost all the bands I follow on Spotify have less than 900,000 listens a month, but most are under 500,000.
People will say they hate AJR and then listen to some emotionless meaningless rap song by Future like “young dope dealer, sellin' dope, is you like that?” 🙄

I'm late to this video by a couple of years, lol. But I started my own business and the song Come Hang Out has been really relatable. Because when you take the initiative to do what you want to do, you miss a lot of things. But in the end you realize that you didn't miss anything because they weren't supposed to be there with you in the end. And in the beginning you're always saying 'next time'. I don't normally watch videos about this kind of stuff. My RU-vid is pretty much music, Bob Proctor, and maybe a random video or two. Occasionally my own videos get recommended to me. But I loved this.
Idk, I like their energy and like singing their stuff with my little girl. It sounds to me like some 20 somethings working through their head shit. The troubles arent new, but it always feels new to the person feeling it. And its done well and fun. Ao why hate?
I actually like their song which are unique and with orchestra instruments and vocals. The only thing is some of their songs are sad like about getting older and also nostalgia

They just make bad music, i dont hate the guys they seem positive and cool to be around but that wont make the music good. The production is good, the song writing is just trash and Anthony Fantanos April fools video on AJR where he has the split flannel is comedy genius, he reads a lot of the lyrics out loud and pretty much perfectly explains why they are beyond terrible.
the reason people "hate" ajr, is because it feels very shallow, like the type of music you'd hear in a tv commercial. and the relatable aspect of it, while being very inclined towards millenials, feels too open and isn't really witty. it's just kind of boring and flavorless.
A coworker recently got me into AJR, and even more recently I stumbled into disdainful comments towards them but no reason or context. Definitely helps clear things up, wanted to make sure I wasn't stumbling onto an actually problematic group of people.
I highly doubt most people dislike AJR because they don’t like music about relatable things. People love songs that they can relate to and deep tracks about serious topics that are done really well get praised by critics and fans all the time. The reason people don’t like AJR is because they don’t enjoy the way their music sounds. They think it sounds bad. There’s nothing inherently wrong with liking AJR but there is also nothing special or weird or wrong about not like AJR. Their sound just isn’t for everybody. And that’s ok
i feel like its one of those things where people hate it because its popular so its inevitable eventually some people will hate it and they end up being the loud minority like can you think of any popular thing that doesnt have haters? and im not saying that people hate it because its popular im saying it like this lets say for every 10,000 ajr fans 1 is a genuine hater but the more people who are exposed the more fans but also the more haters and as you rarely feel the need to gush a thing everyone likes but your way more inclined to say an opinion most people disagree with the haters end up being the loud minority
