It seems like the obvious analogy from human medicine is that you'd take a donor bark in the exact measurements and graft it in place. People do tree grafting all the time, why not a skin graft? I don't see anything that applying a moss to it would accomplish. I'm not saying I know anything about it, but it just seems like human medicine from before we understood about bacteria and sanitation, doctors just said things and people accepted it; but the truth was way different.

another thing you can do is use is damp hessian sacks around the bark you want to heal in the same way
@Draeyk
@Draeyk 8 месяцев назад
The key thing is here is using sphagnum moss. and keeping up moisture so it can activate. Hessian dries out very quickly, I assume you're thinking of something other than plastic?

This is so helpful advice. Can you please show us how this tree looks today? Did it survive? How long did you need to leave the moss on for? Did you have to do anything else to help it recover?
@Draeyk
@Draeyk 10 месяцев назад
Hi there, I am afraid I have moved away from the area. I had been told it is doing fine however. The moss remained on for a season, I checked healing at various times. Nothing else was done physically to assist the tree.

Grateful for your speedy reply. Hope you are in another good spot. Drawing from your news, I am now more determined to try a poultice with rehydrated spragnum moss/seaweed available. Sadly nothing fresh on hand and no young branches suitable to try a bridging graft. Some very long strips about 3 feet each were torn off these two young trees here. 😔 It will be a very hot El Niño Summer here too I suspect. Here's hoping these two will overcome their injuries.🍀

Is there anything that I can do for a severely damaged fig tree. I live in a desert climate. It's an older tree and it's leaves look gorgeous...but I'm afraid most of the bark is gone.
@rayasunchine
@rayasunchine 3 месяца назад
@@jodydeats1195 Sorry to hear that. I managed to keep the two damaged trees I had going by using slender Privet stems (not ideal) to make bridging grafts to cover the front half of the bark that got ripped off. We still had the back half covered in bark, thankfully. Cleaned the injuries with copper sulphate solution first; rinsed. Did the grafts then we slit open bread bags to electrical tape up into a sleeve, filled that evenly with the hydrated spraghnum/seaweed poultice, held top and bottom with grafting tape, some taped rings too to keep the poultice contents from slipping down inside the sleeve. Trees survived the Summer although not growing quite as large as their siblings. Monitoring...

Can I try this on my weeping cherry tree? I have no idea how the bark split half way around. Another video said it's from sunburn or sun scald and suggested painting with some kind of organic tree bark paint. I want to save my tree but it's been here for 18 years now and my neighbor wants me to cut it down. But it's bloomed better this year than the last few probably due to more rain. My late mom planted it (she used to live beside me.)
@Draeyk
@Draeyk Год назад
You can try but cherry trees often do this for many reasons. The moss will help against infection.

Appreciate the video. We had a buck girdle....I think it's called girdle? About 3/4th our new apple tree. There is still about an inch or so of bark intact all the way up from the 3 foot or so damaged area. I was curious if your moss trick worked and or if we should be worried about rot from the moisture. Any info is appreciated
@Draeyk
@Draeyk Год назад
Since I made this I moved out of area but I’ve used this method on numerous trees. Depending on extent of damage it is often successful. An inch of bark means this method is unlikely to work but always worth a try, individual trees have varying capacities to heal, just like humans they are individuals:) good luck

That’s a tough one. Sounds like extreme damage. Moss wrap can only go so far. But always worth a shot.

I want to fix a tree that some dogs ripped off the bark from the ground up about 4 ft. 80-85% around the tree. If I'm not near a pond, what could I use other than moss, or is there some moss I can buy from a store that would work? Like the moss they use for the bottom of lizard cages?
@Draeyk
@Draeyk Год назад
Honestly, if there is that much damage then its unlikely to heal. It also depends on species, age and so on but the description you have given doesn't look promising, but Ive seen trees last for a few years if not completely ringed. Try with the moss... not sure what is used on Lazard cages. Hope it works and thank you for caring enough to give it a go!

Healing implies cellular replacement which trees cannot do. Closing off the wound/compartmentalization of decay would be the correct wording. Not trying to argue semantics just stating for clarification. Cool video btw!

Hi. I have a silver birch and a woodpecker has gone pretty deep approx half to 3/4 the way up the tree. Tree is young and stands around 30ft with around 15ft above the damaged area which is around 2.5" diameter at the point where the holes are, there are 3 holes quite close to each other and they go very deep. It looks like a big wind storm could take out the top of the tree. Could i fill the holes with anything? any way i can repair this section or is it best to cut the top off earlier rather than wait till it breaks later? What if i was to cut a piece out of some living wood from some branches i just pruned and trim off the bark and wedge some of that in the holes?
@Draeyk
@Draeyk Год назад
Late reply but I suspect the top will be lost given your description.
@Draeyk
@Draeyk Год назад
You can also try plugging holes. I know folks have had success with bees wax.
@izzzzzz6
@izzzzzz6 Год назад
@@Draeyk Thanks. For now i tied splints running parallel to the trunk. I'm hoping the hole will heal. So far it is holding up but we will see what happens when the snow comes. The tree had grass clippings left at the base and i believe this allowed insects to enter the tree at the base encouraging the woodpecker to find these higher up in the tree. Not sure but the splints i put there also cover over the damaged part to stop the bird from attacking any deeper. Hopefully he removed the insects. lol
