Paradoxically, I loved the movie, it's incredibly detailed, but found that "never saved anything..." line too too idealistic based on personal experience and learning of the experience of others. I think in fact it's my least favourite part of the whole movie, with everything else being nearly perfect. Yes, fear shouldn't guide our decisions, but neither should idealism.
Michael was and always will be a cinematic genius. His trademark was his beautiful cinematography and emotional stories. Deer Hunter and Heavens Gate are some of the most beautiful films ever made just works of art
For me, gattaca is a masterpiece. I have the VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. Seen the movie about 15 times. And Everytime I see it, it feels like it's the first time I'm seeing it. It's one of my very favorite movies ever.
I can’t believe that Gattaca was overlooked. It is literally a masterpiece. One of the greats. It can be analysed as it holds so much wisdom! Completely underrated.
Ethan gave some excellent advice on how to prepare for a role. Each role is different. In role he was SP to MJ. Yes I used basketball players to talk about acting. Jacquie Taliaferro
Dead Poet's Society is a masterpiece. As an Australian we are proud to lay claim to the genius that is Peter Weir. Gattaca is a stunning film with a beautiful soundtrack. Reality Bites spoke to this Gen Xer in her first year as a teacher wondering what my purpose and path was. The Sunrise Trilogy is fantastic. I have also read Ethan's novels and he is a humorous and thoughtful writer. Love him and his thoughtful, honest, considered responses!
He did 80 takes to get clues in the sets lined up, so actors would put their noses on the clues or they'd point to them or their elbows would point at the clues as they walked by. That's why he had Cruise walk through a doorway 80 or so times.
The craziest part is accepting that deal is a bit nuts.. Cimino coulda been shooting Citizen Kane level stuff and Clint coulda just been like. "nah I don't like this guy." But maybe Cimino probably got the vibe that Clint would be honest if he liked the stuff. Great film.
Interesting what Pollack says about Cruise and having to do a lot of takes. I don't particularly care for Cruise's relationship in EWS. I felt it needed more depth and Tom was limited in that way. Having said that, I applaud Tom for taking on the role and subject matter. He no longer does roles that make you think, question, or even challenge.
Somehow when Mr. Lumet said 'I don't know if you remember the scene', I just knew he was about to talk about the boathouse scene in The Godfather II. I'm confident many other people reacted like me, as it is such a powerful, moving, and unforgettable scene. I've read that seating in that chair was Cazale's idea. He thought the difficulty of sitting up or getting up in that kind of chair would only emphasize Fredo's vulnerability.
I always figured that the reason he did it was to have as many choices in takes as possible, not necessarily better or worse but different FEELING takes so that when the film was being cut he could assemble them in an order where each one was an interesting response to the one before.
Gattaca is my favorite movie ever. I watched it with my best friend and since then I have seen it at least 15 times in different times of my life. I love it!
It was a different style character for De Niro, perhaps part of his nervousness due to that. The director allowing his "direct to lense" connection let de niro steal every scene he's in. very cool
Gattaca was a great film...... "For someone not meant for this world I must confess, I am suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say that every atom in our bodies was once a part of a star. Maybe I am not leaving. Maybe I am going home."
In the 4 minutes of this interview, Mr. Lumet gives us an insight about acting and directing far more interesting than other people would in hours of talking. Kudos to him. 12 Angry Men, The Hill, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, The Verdict and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (his last film) are all impressive achievements, to say the least.
His films don't often hit these notes, but there is sentiment and a kind of loving kindness that runs through to some degree in all of his films. No problem accepting this film just because there's less viscera.
i always loved Denzel but i became a fan when I saw ethan in training day and ever since i saw his performance i watch anything and everything with him in it
I was around 7 or 8 when we first got cable and i remember this being one of the movies that was airing on HBO at the time. For whatever reason i never saw it though. The theme for whatever reason didn't appeal to me, but I'm surprised i never watched it out of boredom. Even as a kid i had a pretty good gauge when it came to movies. I wasn't partial to liking so called kids movies more and I never watched cartoons, so i don't know why this one got by me. But now knowing the premise it wasn't anything original, not that that is bad in of itself and that premise certainly got beaten to death in movies beyond Tootsie as well, but it reviewed well, so there must have been something there. But it's still weird as to why various forms of the premise have been used countless times. A man becoming a women, a women becoming a man, a man pretending to be black to get into a school, bossum buddies, white chicks, one of the guys... and I'm only scratching the surface.
He's right. One of the best acting in movie history. The Boathouse Scene. I watched it a thousand times and John's performance still makes me speechless
Gene Wilder could never tell a lie. He seems pretty blunt here but you know everything he says about Gilda is genuine. And that's the man she fell in love with. Love that apartment story.
Very few films ever come close to Gattaca's script, superb dialogue, great acting, and beautiful storytelling. It is and will always be in my top 5 films of all times. Shame it did not win the Best Picture award
Generous…deprecating…respectful…poignant…teaching…scolding (gently)….need we go on….shes THE BEST EVER ! Green…that’s it. Brilliant. Don’t understand? Watch the video
