Having been a teen in the 80s watching Allo Allo every week here in New Zealand, I just loved the series. I still say almost every day, to this day, "Good Moaning" as Officer Crabtree's greeting and many other such wonderful sayings such as "It is I, Leclerc", "listen very carefully...", "you stupid woman, can't you see I'm comforting her" A timeless classic of very clever comedy, and wonderful slapstick humour. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip down memory lane with all my favourite characters. A work mate and I still come up with many scenes and laughs from this era, such as from Arkwright's Open All Hours, and especially the Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers. Just a wonderful period of clever slapstick humour, sketchs, jokes, clever inuendo and much giggling and laughter! Superb! I shall pass this on to my elderly Mum for a giggle. She loved this series as well.
The Royal Command Good Life was given the cover of Radio Times. It was definitely billed at a certain time. The implication they "cut the World Cup match" especially to show The Good Life isnt true. Not least because ITV were showing the match! The BBC had arranged for the Royal Command show to go out on a Saturday night. They "cut" the World Cup in so much as they decided not to show that game allowing ITV to do so. Of course it sounds more dramatic the way it was told in the show, which had to live up to its rather spurious title!
I watched it every week even though I was only 5 when it started and most of the jokes went over my head. It’s a shame they don’t make tv shows like this anymore, something all the family could watch without the pc bs and that was funny
I had the privilege of working with Gorden Kaye before he was famous in this show. He was born in Moldgreen Huddersfield and I was a young cameraman working in Huddersfield for a Film production company. Gorden was hired to appear in an industrial "tape slide" promoting a material handling company for use in an exhibition. I had the job of shooting the photographic transparencies and assembling the accompanying soundtrack. He would tell me stories of the goings on behind the scenes on many of the tv commercials he had worked on. He was a very funny and talented actor and I was pleased that he finally got his big break in TV. We saw him years later at one of the truly hilarious live shows. I wondered if he recognised me sat in the front row! 😂
Thank you for posting this mate. I used to watch this when I was living in the states in Michigan. We were close enough to Canada the we got their TV. This was shown weekly there. I was 16 back then. Now I 'm 58. Feeling old now.
Listen very carefully, I shall say zis only wance..........Great memories of watching this as a kid with my Mam every Saturday night. It just got better and better every week! We would laugh out loud. Every character was brilliant, with catchphrases galore, over the top acting/dialogue and so many double entendres. Never get tired of watching it. You have to watch out for the German bumbers and farters! And did the long distance dick's(Ducks) ever reach London!?!? 😀
Couldn't stand it. Or understand it. Too south England for me. Dull as dishwater. The irony was that I eventually went out with a girl from Surbiton. It was just like the series. I left the country.
I'm a Yank, but I grew to love "Are You Being Served?" by watching on PBS over here. All those Mrs. Slocomb's pussy jokes are classic. I couldn't imagine them doing that on American TV in the 1970's. We are too prudish over here.
Doesn't mention the scandal of Wilfrid Brambell was accused of abusing two boys aged 12-13 during the 1970s in Jersey. One of the boys was from the Haut de la Garenne children's home.
I first saw this show at age 8 in Trinidad, and I did not realize at the time the depth of the humor. Still watch it at age 60. Just pure comedy. Love it still.
Stanley is now 98... and still with us! - amazingly talented and a national treasure for sure. He should have been knighted years ago... Come on King Chuck, do what's right!
LOVED Penelope Keith not soaking the beans properly. This scenario also appeared in Ever Decreasing Circles where Paul Ryman asked Martin Bryce the same question while he was fending for himself when his wife was in hospital. Who played Martin Bryce? It was Richard Briars:)
I Loved this show. i was born 1980 and remember my nan used to baby sit me as my mom worked day time as was at collage at night to study, and my nan would make a Night of TV fun with this show and others. but we both like this as my nan was very open about her life in the war. she would cook the best beef stew before the show and have treats ready while watching. this show will always remind me how cool my nan was and given me good memerys. Today i was reminded how lucky i was to have that.
