A well answered and considered response pre-answering the ideological arguments of the opposition. Gauke and Stewart were 2 very good ministers working in an extremely difficult budgetary situation. It was Stewart’s position over reducing violence that first made we aware of him as a political figure. I long for his return.
I’m Labour through and through, but I respect Rory Stewart so much. He clearly cares passionately about the countries interests and is very, very competent. That should be the standard for politicians on all sides. It’s a shame it isn’t.
My Uncle died in the Battle of Hong Hong. the British government removed the RAF detachment, most of the naval force and diverted much heavy equipment including artillery to Australia. The British government had every opportunity to evacuate the 12,000 soldiers. However they fought the battle, facing odds of 5 to 1, just to slow the Japanese advance by 2 weeks. I say he died in vain.

You need to look at Ukraine & what they got up to after the break up & that is their ethnic cleansing of Slavs by the Azov Battalions a bunch of neo Nazi thugs who march with SS flags to honour their great grandfathers who with the SS took part in terrible ethnic cleansing atrocities in the 1000s. The breakaway regions happened due to their murders & destruction of ethnic Slavs that have lived there centuries. This true narrative has been censored by the BBC on earlier reports. Zelensky will take us into WW3, all they had to do was stay NATO neutral & NATO should have told them that whilst NATO has been aggressively been Nato-izing east European countries on Russia's hard border. Would America stand for that like Cuba was, no chance I don't support Putin & it's invasion but I understand why it happened & Ukraine doesn't get my support either.
Why do Russian neighbours desperately want to join nato? Why do they beg? Russia has been the aggressor in 9 conficts against its neighbours since putin took office. What was the one thing that was the consequence of his invasion of Ukraine? A swell of support for nato and a clambering for membership among Russian neighbours. Ukraine wasn't going to get into Nato anytime soon before the invasion; after the invasion it has become a near existential imperative for them. John mershimers analysis can be convincing if you've not dipped your toes in to the history and context of this conflict. And indeed he makes some interesting points, but his univariate analysis that's purely nato expansion is so incredibly weak in the face of this very complex situation.
Tragic that this video has only 360 views. I only saw it today as Rory mentioned a debate on his podcast. So he was pointing this out in 2015? How can we have the brains, the information and yet we vote in the likes of Johnson?
I couldn’t agree with you more. I started to get to ‘know’ Rory whilst listening to @therestispolitics podcast and I’m now in awe of his intelligence, foresight and ability to articulate complicated topics to listeners in a way we can relate and understand. The best prime minister we never had.

This man knows what he is talking about ,I was in Germany in the 1970,sat that time we had fifty five thousand troops in bar plus raf support.through short sighted policy by people with little idea of what what we were there for . Since then we have got rid of several armoured divisions which included tanks artillery engineers armoured engineers supply d logistics, this was because it was we were not going to face Russia

Rory Stewart must be one of the best prime ministers we never had - a decent and honourable politician, head and shoulders above many left in the Tory party.
As a Labour supporter I would have comfortably voted conservative if this guy was in charge, otherwise I’d rather take a cyanide pill than vote conservative.

Rory, I am a dual citizen held in detention for the last 2.7 years. I wish the Australian Morrison government had made any efforts at all. I am a political prisoner due to Morrison, There is no end sight except except if I hang myself with the rope I bought (which could well be the plan).. The only assistance the last government provided was a fake phone call from the "Australian Consul General in Bali." I am beyond desperation. If they want me dead I wish they would just tell me and it will be easier for all of us. .
What a tragedy Rory Stewart is no longer in Parliament. I have rarely heard such a brilliant analysis of the threats posed by Russia and what steps are required. Sadly the current leadership race highlights we are entering into a much lower standard of politics than the ability displayed by Mr Stewart in this broadcast.
