I remember those self retracting side stands on that model, learned very quickly to make sure my left ankle was well away from the stand when moved the bike upright as the stand flicked back. Learned the hard way! I do like the concept though and missed this feature on my next bike, a 1981 R100RT.
I owned an identical year model and colour 1981 to 1983. I miss it. Then bought an RT for touring. I don't remember the pannier frames being black though. Very nice looking bike. Haven't seen a gold RS on the road for many years. When I started touring on it, found the 300km (180mile) tank range an problem when riding on weekends through small towns whose gas stations were closed from 12 noon Sat til Monday morning. Even the RT had a similar tank range. I bought the RS from a chap who flew to Germany and took delivery from the factory. Toured Europe then had it shipped home.
The original “order acknowledgement” from Paul Dunstall Organisation Ltd lists…and I quote “Single Disc Hydraulic Front Brake”. The owner, the kicker in the video, still has the paperwork.
My '77 is the typical blue, but I've seen the gold ones in person at BMW rallies, and at first they look weird, but that color grew on me fast, they're stunning. Few finer streetbikes, now vintage, then an RS, you can ride one every day and always love it.
That's my Goldie at 2:15. She's been to Michigan to San Diego twice, and all over the midwest, Airhead Rallys. Best bike ever. Sold her to Chris B. in Pittsburg. PA
50,000 miles through Europe on my R100RS. ... Once had to hurry back to Belgium from Madrid at night:, I afterwards calculated over 80mph average, gas stops included. Speed nearly never under 110 mph, for hours not even tired when I got there. No speed traps at the time...
Grilfirend + 2 Krausers fully loaded + big bag on reservoir: 6 to 8 hrs quasi non stop included hours at 160 km/h on highways. No problem with the 100 RS
I owned the same bike in78/9. I cant remember when BMW changed the air filter box... the original looked part of the engine.. not the cheap looking plastic box they started using on later models. If there is one Bike I regret selling it would be the R100RS..Its build quality, reliability were second to none. In its time a very advanced touring bike, and still good even now..over forty years later...
One of the most beautiful bikes ever made. I had a blue 1977 BMW R100RS some years ago, and I just loved that bike. Today I ride a BMW R1100RS. Also a fantastic bike.
My first BMW was a Blue R80/7 to which I fitted the R100RS fairing kit: new head light bracketing ,wiring harness, handlebars, stiffer fork springs etc!... The 800cc was a lovely smooth running bike. I later sold it for the one featured...
Hello Steve my voltmeter jump up and down between roughly 12 and 14.4 volts when I run on the road. Is your tip indeed that I might need to clean the connections? I wish to reach that same smoothness you showed here almost 10 years ago :-)
The motometer vm dampening for the needles doesn't last forever unfortunately. My guess is that yours is starting to struggle. Cleaning the connections won't do any harm...worth doing to see if it helps. If the dampening is on the way out though I doubt it will.
@@Steve.D Hi Steve. I have a couple of pictures after i painted it correctly for my friend. I found it on ebay in smoke red. The guy was going to break it up. It is absolutely correct, registered late 76. How do i send you the pictures. not too good on computors.
Recent convert - I have a Tuono but wanted a longer distance useable classic. Bought a silver ‘90 model - love it. As a vtwin fan, the boxer is equally quirky, love the torque. Great video - lovely bikes.
You stupid or what? They are not even poisonous to human and they are completely harmless idiot besides Black-W-S is more poisonous than them and the *Golden-O-W-S’s bite just gives pain and Swelling
This is an iphone recording of an instagram video, please excuse the quality. The bike is a 1982 R100RS BMW using the Keihan sports mufflers made by Keihan (UK) and designed by Jim Cray. Taken at Cobungra, Victoria, Oz.
Sounds easy. I will lay a tarp to catch the little critters. Then I suppose they will flick into the folds of the bike and get lost. Haha. I’m wondering if you have had issues with the mirrors vibrating. Mine are pretty bad. I can barely see behind me motoring along modestly. Worse so in the left mirror. The mechanic at K&R in Melbourne who is a veteran authority says its not rectifiable and too bad. I tried tightening the mirror mounts to no effect. Do you possibly have any suggestions please? Do the fairing mounts maybe have rubber bushes which maybe have perished? Just a stab in the dark.
Slow to reply sorry. Ensure the fairing is not loose at the fairing frame. Run a tiny bead of silicone around the edge of the glass. If the glass is loose it might help, otherwise Phil will be right.
Yep. Moving the screen slightly and just enough reduces the friction fit and they fall out. The trick is to avoid dropping them because they’ll always end up in the furtherest corner of the shed. Never had any damage at all with these.
Yes you can change it easily enough, though as with a few of the airhead design features it might've been better designed. Practice at home so you know what to do if it ever happens whilst riding. It's 5 screws and a latch. Exchange the bulb and reassemble in reverse. The tricky bit is ensuring the headlight assembly seats correctly and ensuring the latch and screw are correctly seated/fastened.
