I saw Sir Lady Java in LA in t he late sevetys, it was a great show and a real treat. A green girl from St Louis I had never seen anyone like her. So glad to see she has not been forgotten.
William Dorsey Swann's story is remarkable. One unfortunate side effect: No images of him are known to exist, so people are now using later photos of another performer to represent Swann without naming the person actually portrayed in the images or mentioning his story. The photographs seen at 0:57-1:05 in the video don't show Swann. Instead, they're French postcards of the American vaudeville duo Charles Gregory and Jack Brown, who caused a sensation when they introduced the cakewalk to Paris in 1902. Film pioneer Louis Lumière even made a short of their act: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ATEb9RGIBzc.html Jack Brown’s drag cakewalk performance inspired a number of similar drag acts in France and elsewhere in Europe. I'd like to see further research done on the story of Gregory and Brown themselves as pioneering African American stage performers. They merit recognition, as well. In our eagerness to share Swann's story, let's please do refrain from inadvertently erasing the names of two other African American - and likely queer - figures from history who deserve to be honored in their own right.
Hi Gerard. Thanks for the detailed reply. We realize no images of William Dorsey Swann are known to exist, and did not want to mislead anyone with other images. The images referenced are from a BBC video, but they are not labeled as William Dorsey Swann. They are labeled as "two actors, one in drag, perform in Paris, 1903." We can't speak for why the BBC labeled the images the way it did. We agree with you that Charles Gregory and Jack Brown deserve further research and recognition. In the article, we mention that no known photos of Swann are known to exist.
"Absorbs most of my munificence!" Not something we hear everyday. You were magnificent Dame Edna in the pool scene, and I got quite a good laugh from it.
I really hope it's not cliquey ... I tend to feel like an outcast when I'm around other lesbians in LA & I've known other lesbians who don't like hanging out in LA because they feel like the lesbian scene can be gossipy and judgemental of other women. Hopefully this place changes my mind about the lesbian scene in LA because I've been wanting to go to a bar that feels more welcoming and comfortable.
God bless you Dame Edna! We love you very much for the laughter you have bought us over so many decades.Thank you indeed for appearing in this film with fellow laughter-crafters, Jennifer and Joanna!
