Welcome to our channel. "One Man And His Boat" is about myself, Barry Brunton, and the 'Lynsey B', our brand new Cygnus 21 creel fishing boat. We will document our adventures, from the arrival of the boat, the fit out, the launch and our fishing adventurers off the historic Scottish harbour of Dunbar.
We'll be showing some of the sights and the wildlife to be found in this part of Scotland. We'll also be featuring the other boats that work out of Dunbar and speak to some of the characters in and around the harbour.
So if that's something you'd be interested in, please feel free to join us by subscribing and commenting on the videos. We try to answer every question or comment. We also welcome suggestions for future content.
Another strong NE wind today so more days lost at sea. I have hardly managed to get off the North Norfolk coast at all this year as a leisure fisherman but at least it is not my living. I really feel for you as when fishing is your way of life and your boat is like a second home it is very hard to make that heartbreaking decision that your business model is not viable.
Thank you, Garry. Trust me when I say all the fishermen are thinking the same, including myself 🙈😞 It shows the state that the fishing industry is in.😢 All the best. Baz😉👍
That's hellish £5. Then the restuarants charge £28 for sticking a bit garlic on it and your only getting a fiver and all you've to go through something very far wrong here
Thank you, Anne. You are so right....but what can we do🤷♂️ we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. To cut out the middle man costs a fortune to start off with, and who says we can get a constant sell all the way through the year if we go selling direct from the boat. It's a difficult hill to climb, that's for sure. All the very best, Anne.😉👍
Hi Barry what a great honor it was to have finally met you pure gentleman I hope the weather and the catch has been good for you I know it's costing a lot more nowadays yet we get paid very little for all our hard work ⛴️🤗🙏
@@latterdaysaint6582 Hi Mathew. It was a pleasure to have a bleather buddy. I hope you get yourself sorted out with your problems of your wee vessel 😁👌 Please tip the hat anytime. 😁 All the best.😉👍
@latterdaysaint6582 still got a broken boat bud, but I was able to save 4 fleets for impending doom of a northerly sea that's coming.🙈😁👌 But thank you.😍😁👌
Crazy. And when I want to go and actually buy some good seafood selection is limited and expensive. I even had to go through an online fishmonger and have them deliver my order packed in ice because all the fishmongers I knew don't exist anymore.
That's it, Daniel. It's a disgrace what's happening to our industry, it's not just the fishermen affected, it's all the folks round about that rely on the fishermen, but we're get culled too, by the men in suits that think they know better, the whole show is a shambles 😞 Thank you so much for your comment. All the best. Baz.😁👌
We've 2 they more or less live on our garage roof, they wait for us to get up in the morning, watch us in the kitchen breakfast half 8 they're first feed, know 11 is mid morning break lunch 1, 3pm fed again 6pm We've to keep the door shut or they'd come in we've had them for about 10 years they get our left overs chicken, sausages you name it theyll have it, we've to just about to lift them back on the garage roof. My pals one wakes her up 5am taps the window for a tin tuna 🐟
Hi. No, I don't use leaded rope for my leaders. Tried that 1st season, I had nothing but bother with them gripping the ground. So back to what I know best. Floaty rope and a wee bit of chain. But, that's what works best for me, in my area, it may work differently for you in your area.😁👌 All the best. Baz.😉👍
Hi Mark. Thank you so much for your kind comment. It all depends on the season on when I leave to fish. Being a traditional fisherman, I like to leave for 1st light. Over the last few weeks, 1st light is becoming later and later. I'm not keen on this time of year coming.🙈🤣🤣🤣 All the best. Baz.😉👍
That's also a thought, Alan. Just so you know the peg trick works very well indeed, I'm a bit upset that I had so many holes in my gear, but at least the peg method helps me find them quickly when they come back on board the next day.😁👌 All the best, bud. Baz 😉👍
When we were sending crab and lobster to france, the biggest issue with price was dead loss at wholesale . They want them alive, some of them travel for days lobsters don't travel well, so it hammers up prices . if the weather is hot because we knew they die before seeing a cooking pot. you guys need to set up a Co op and sell the product locally. Get rid of the bloody middlemen who export . you would get better prices and depend on less product to sell . If I can find a lobster in the UK, it's crazy money . we literally can't buy fresh crab or lobster its heart breaking, knowing so much of what you catch is dumped dead in the EU, and they end up with limp weak half dead product in coolers .that product should be available here . Processing crab meat into pots takes seconds with a compressor and could demand good prices and could be sold before it's even had time to cool down . Or then sold as frozen very easily untouched . Why is it if we look for lobsters on seaside towns its normally north American lobster tails when there's guy like you landing fresh ones sometimes yards from fishmongers on seafronts selling shelfish imported from all over the world . Even the cod we buy over the counter is alaskan or North American haddock in our chippys . When boats land top grade products, it should be sold and processed at the harbour . If all the skippers of small boats got together, you could take back control of what you catch and your price would reflect its true value not what some dummy needs to sell for to compensate for dead loss at a factory in Luxembourg because hot weather kills a massive percentage of what is shipped to them .that's why winter prices are good . theres less products, it stays alive in cooler weather . Like those 4 crab you threw back if you sold them off the boat, you could ask more for them than you get for your lobster from the buyer During lockdown, I had a local fisherman delivering shellfish to the door. For example the only place I could get life crab out of a tank I was paying £8 per lb ! Lobster was £17 per lb, and it was brought to the shop in glasgow from Ayrshire
@onemanandhisboat it's what I call the panda effect . If pandas weren't endangered, they wouldn't be worth millions to charity's . What they do with live shipping of shelfish is exactly the same if you think about the daily landings of crab and lobsters every day for export theres not enough bellys in the Europe to eat tons of crab every day
@Fishhunter0 that's too true, when you think about it. But still, why is it always the fishermen that have to take the hit. I mean, things are hard enough as is without that on top of it 🙄🙈 But it does really explain why they are so low...poor wee beasties too.🦞🦞🦞 hellish life they have in the end.😞
@onemanandhisboat just £££s mate thats all sellers on the top think of . But they give the local rule makers really nice dinners and board and lodging wile they sit down with them to lobby for the rules that screwed us for years
If the Spitfire has been sold, is it still there. And would it mean more fishing prospects for you. Maybe one day your own boat will be up for sale, but not yet Barry, you are not long in the tooth yet. So crack on Bazza and do what yer can, it's the only way really.
@garry9999 the spitfire is away to Troon Garry, best place for it, hopefully she'll get a good retirement through there. These days, everything has a price, and if the cheque was high enough, she'd be gone too😱🙈🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for your comment. All the best.😉👍
@@onemanandhisboat Which is why you do it, and why we watch 👍 Sorry to hear about the other bad news, theiving scrotes need a proper lesson, too much of it about 🤬
Who bought the boat Barry? When something sells that fast it’s usually because someone is incredibly naive or knows something that no one else does. Over here there was a staged change, licences attached to boats, government started buying back licenses to reduce the commercial pressure, then quotas. The guys that hung in, have done alright.
Hi Dave. The owner is 80 years old, and I think he just had enough of all the BS. So he sold it all cheap, and I can tell you he's a lot happier for it😁👌 The fellas that bought it have family in a boat yard, so all is good for the new owners, too.😉👍 As for our government, we wouldn't trust them to run a sweetie shop in the middle of a playground, let alone actually run a country.🙄🙈🤣🤣🤣🤣 All the best, bud.😉👍
Bless you Barry I know the feeling I'm trying to get my damaged boat home but it's a fight with the insurance and the people in the office so I know where your coming from never give up never give in your an amazing inspiration to so many other fishermen and women all over it is hard yes if you need a hand I'm local to you and I'd offer my services to help out for free I know how hard it can be God bless you mate
Thank you so much for your kind comment and definitely your support. It's very well appreciated. 😍❤️😁👌 Good luck with sorting out getting your boat home, we wish you all the very best.😉👍
@@onemanandhisboat Your more than welcome Barry I findout today if my boat is finally going to be coming home once and for all so the long restoration can take place.🙏🙏👍⛴️
Sorry to hear this Barry. You will make the right decision for you and yours. Such a disgrace that the idiots in the office haven't got a clue about the decisions they make and the consequences of their actions.
it is an absolute disgrace that the sustainable day boat fishermen are not being empowered to allow them to make a reasonable living. Meanwhile our governments continue to grant licences to foreign factory ships to come and rape our fishing grounds. The only answer I have is to vote reform and pray.
@@onemanandhisboat I had a job through to price for renovating council houses, it was 150 pages long, nearly every builder told them to shove it. Written by an a hole behind a desk.
@MauserGSY yup, that's like our MCA. Stated of 84 pages long when selfish were in charge ( another government group🙄🙈) and then the MCA took over a few years ago now, 250 pages of BULL💩 now, it's bloody ridiculous...it's always the working man that gets hardest by these cretins 😡😡😡😡 Anyways. Have a great afternoon, bud. All the best.😉👍
@MauserGSY of course, but these people don't care, they haven't got a clue.🙄🙈 They'll soon moan when their fish and chips are small fortune and tastes like 💩 because we have to import the stuff...just doesn't make sense for an island nation.🙄🙈😡😡😡
Happy wife, happy life, sad to here Barry but your family do come first mate, I really do hope you stay and things pick up because I truly love watching with anticipation to see what comes out off your creels, all be best bud
@albertrussell4224 Thank you 😊 Really appreciate your support 😍❤️😁👌 I'm sure if someone offered the right money, I would be like the rest of the fleet, because theirs no future in fishing now. The average age of a fisherman in the UK is 55 years old...now that says something 🙈😞 All the best. Baz.😉👍
Hi bud. Actually, your guess is as good as mine. But I do know a nice lobster, salad and chips will cost you £49 in the next town to us, and £70 in Oban, which is the west coast from us. All the best. Baz😉👍
Hi Oskar. We fish our pots from 1.5 fathom to 18-20 fathom. 😁👌🦞🦞🦞 That all depends on how bad the forecast is and how long it's going to last, the worse the forecast the deeper the pots, mind you sometimes at this time of year we chase the lobster out into the deeper water as that's their migrational March. I hope that answers your question. 😁 All the very best. Baz.😉👍
Hello Baz, a day late for me as I had to work yesterday. Love the drone footage! It's a shame that the lobster numbers weren't what you would have liked to see. Here's to better days my friend. Thanks for sharing your dy with us all.
Hi Terry. I hope work wasn't too taxing.🙈😬😬😬😉👍 Aye, that's fishing for you sir, some days it's all black gold and excitement, and the next...Well, back to beans on toast for tea.🙈🙈🙈🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for your kind comment. All the very best. Baz.😉👍
Hi Richard. Yeah, it always the same with fishing, we can't catch them all the time, plus I think that South Easter hurt them a little bit.🙈 But what a beautiful morning, though😍❤️😁👌 Thank you so much for your kind comment. All the very best. Baz.😉👍
Another great vlog Barry, realy great shots with the drone Jeff, beautiful colours of the sky and sea. If gulls were lobsters you'd be a millionaire, yes you're pretty well boxed in there. I loved the close ups off the lobsters, realy great. For Petes sake couldn't believe it casting lines as you were coming in, that's realy scarey, just unbelievable I was down yesterday, a nice day spoiled by the wind ,
Hi Anne. As always, thank you so much for your wonderful comment and support 😍😁👌 Yeah, I couldn't believe that guy either. I asked him not to cast until we had got that shot coming into the harbour with the drone ( which Jeff had already explained) Then the idiot did it again as I was leaving the harbour to turn around.😱🙈🙄🙄🙄🙄 Some folks have no sense or common decency 😡. Anyway, their was a small swear word or two muttered under my breath🙈🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm so sorry you had a windy visit, but at least it was better than your visit before last 🙈😞 Hope you andmum have a wonderful weekend. All the very best. Baz.😉👍
Some days arnt as good as others Barry, however life goes on and hopefully your next trip makes up for it. Have the lobster catches been getting less over the past few years or is it because lobstermen are putting more creels into the sea? I know shore fishing here in Northern Ireland has deteriorated on a large scale over the past 5 years and that is down partly to the big trawlers cleaning up everything in their path. I would be concerned of the sustainability in everything we do in this current climate even as a vegetable growerfor my own needs it gets harder each year. Anyway Barry best wishes on your next trip and take care 👍
Hi Peter. That is very true about my catch sir..not every day is a good day😁👌🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, catches will always go down when an area is over fished, and we are seeing that here now. I feel sorry for all the Irish fishermen just now..the EU is doing to you exactly what they done to us in the 90's and like you our government had their greasy hands in the EU's back pocket. But what will they do when they hoover up everything..industrial fishing is so bad it breaks my heart to see, maybe one day, man will see sense, but that's not going to happen for a long time yet.😞 All the best. Baz😉👍
Gday mate we have the same problem at our harbour massive sins saying no fishing from docks do they take any notice ? none at all and when they get checked about it they get all shitty ,the mess some of them leave behind on the dock is terrible if a boat gets line tangled round its prop you can tear the seals to pieces and the repair is not cheap nor easy so i have no qualms with having a go at some fool who doesnt play by the rules ,on a brighter note had a report from some fellas across the gulf who bagged out on blue swimmer crabs at this time of year not really heard of so heres hoping that it will be a cracker season this year for them ,can you askgeeoff how far his transmiting range os for his dron as in one shot it was a long way from the shore , i know of blokes in thailand who have lost comms with their drones and they have just flown of into the jungle never to be seen again they will find it in a thousand years and say prehistoric flying machine take care .
The Mavic 3 I was flying for this vlog has a max range of around 8km but we have to keep the drone in Visual Line Of Sight (VLOS) at all times under UK drone laws. For this video I flew out to around 500 metres but it in line of sight at all times as it’s over the sea. Over land with hills and trees I wouldn’t fly it very far at all. 😊
