Old Nikons and Leicas are similar, in that they were expensive camera's in the day. As such, they were used by professionals and well heeled amateurs. You're right, condition is everything! Better to get a camera that was owned and pampered by a dentist in Toledo than a camera that was used by a photo journalist who was using it in the back country in Vietnam and ran several thousand rolls through it. That said, both deserve a CLA, and even an old warhorse can be brought back to life. These are fun cameras with an amazing history. Nikon not only revolutionized 35mm photography with their cameras and lenses, but the F's introduction also signaled the comeback of Japan as an economic powerhouse after their destruction during WW2.

I notice in the comments that a lot of people have both an F and F2, as well as assorted Nikkormats and later Nikon 35's. Since we are talking about fifty plus year old manual cameras here, I think it's clear that we are all turned on by the tactile enjoyment of using these old cameras. They all have their quirks and limitations compared to modern digital cameras. That said, overcoming their limitations and making great photographs, like the folks who were using then a half a century ago, is what makes then so much fun and a challenge to use! Oh, great video!

I find the D700 is highly valued for its natural color reproduction and ease of editing. The D700 captures tonal transitions that I didn't see in other cameras. I also have a D3S but the results have nothing to do with it. Shooting in RAW on the D3S it is as if the photo had already been edited because there is a contrast, saturation, warmth that seems to be the result of an edit. On the other hand, on the D700 the RAW image is soft but with great capacity and margin for editing. I can edit a D700 photo to look like it was taken with the D3S but I can't do the opposite. I don't have the entire Nikon line of DSRL but I read comments from many who do and still maintain that there is nothing like the D700. Thank you Jules.

For exceptional clarity, sharpness and detail the 1.8; for a more pleasing overall look (a bit less perfection, but to my eye better for portraits and other situations) then the 1.4. On a modern digital camera you cannot focus manually. Yes, you got the green dot, but you never now the AF sensor isn't fooled by a cobweb or a tiny twig in between. If you want to focus manually only a split image focussing screen is satisfactory and reliable. The standard lens. It is not 50 mm. The standard lens focal distance is the length of the diagonal of the sensor. So on FX, thr std lens is about 43 mm. BUT the lens optical formulas could not be solved for any focal length, back in the days without computers So they chose 50 mm for FX. A DX film (16x24 mm) has a diagonal of 29 mm, so a logical value for the std lens would be 30 or 35 mm. NOW you can come with the crop factor. The DX crop factor = 43 / 29 = 1.5 This is where it originates from. An FX lens projects an image circle of about 45 mm diameter. If you place a DX sensor under an FX image circle you only use the center part. So the angle of the used light cone changes. And so does the apparent focal length. And the amount of light received, also changes. The width of the subject at 25 meters (or feet) on FX = 900 / focal length. On DX that is 600 / focal length. Forget the angle of view. Use the W25. On my website I try to explain it more but I am not alloed to share links on the toob.

@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 7 дней назад
@@Pozi_Drive On a mirrorless camera you can magnify the view 100% to aid in focusing. It makes for very accurate focusing. I have shot my 50mm 1.4 Pre Ai manual focus Nikkor at 1.4 with excellent results. Of course I’m talking about shooting a stationary subject. I recently published a video on that lens.

The days of film are long passed. In the old days every tobacci shop sold 20 types of film from 5 brands. Now you are lucky to find Ilford or Fuji. In the days we had no choice. Nowadays we have that choice. Don't go the way with exposing, developing, printing and waiting for a week to see the results. All under the presumption that no one goofed up in the processing. Film is for old men. Don't go that route. Even if your woke company says you must.

Film has enjoyed a bit of a come back in recent years. I believe digital is better for the beginner, but once you understand the basics, you can shoot film. Some people prefer it and nothing beats a traditional B&W darkroom print. Having said that, I much prefer shooting digital, but I would never criticize someone who prefers shooting film. It's great that we have a choice.

It depends where you live. I live in a densely populated rural area in Europe (Tilburg NL, look it up) so my walkaround lens is the 35 mm or the 24 mm. the rendering of this old lens in particular, with the '3D pop', high vignetting and gentle contrasts will justify the (low) cost!

@@campbells0ups I love a lot of these old manual focus lenses. Nikkor’s of course but also some of the Minolta, Pentax and Canon’s. Thanks for watching.

They ( B&H ) knew who they were shipping that lens to!!! Kudos to B&H and Congrats to Jules! Nice unboxing and first impressions Jules. Since I have the Nikkor S 50 f/1.8 lens already, I will pass, but I am really looking into that new 35 f/1.4! Things are tight right now. Just sent my 24-200 off to B&H for eval and a check. Will be cleaning house and a few more will be going there way. 😕 Take care and stay safe

Thank you George. Are you having problems with the 24-200?

@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 You're welcome Jules. No problems, actually liked that lens, despite the ‘touchy’ control ring. Financial constraints have required me to part with it, along with some of my other Photo equipment. These are challenging times.
