After a 40+ years working career, I gladly retired end of 2022. This finally gave me all the time I need to explore more of the "Wild World" around us.
For me, "in The Wild" primarily means doing more Hiking, but also to experience Nature & Wildlife, Scuba Diving, and last but not least, Volcano Watching!
I kick-started this channel early 2023 by uploading a few videos from just before my retirement, while I'm since then sharing new material.
Hope you will find some of the stuff I share here enjoyable.
Beautiful video! - really appreciated the shots of wild flowers, along with their names. I have hiked in this region myself - watching this brings back memories. When we were there we shared the landscape with roaming herds of reindeer! On a technical note - I’d be very interested in knowing what you wear on your feet when crossing streams? Whatever you do, it looks like it works - I don’t think we ever solved this problem satisfactorily! (Fortunately, we didn’t cross too many streams, but when we did, it was a bit of challenge). Hope to go back one day…
TQ for your kind feedback 🙏🏼 I used Skinners sock shoes, which I find to be good for crossing rivers. However, I've found out that AFTER a crossing, they're quite slow to dry (in the outside mesh pocket of my backpack), thus a bit heavy to carry around. So, I'm considering changing to a pair of ultralight mesh shoes instead. Happy Hiking!
Thanks. Good to know. We have dived with them before, two trips to Mabul, and another trip just to Kota Kinabalu. Hoping to head to to Scuba Junkie Komodo next, but will definitely have to add Sangalaki to the wish list. We have always found them to operate a great service.
Just found your channel and have to say that you are doing a great job on the editing. Way to much people and just sad to read that they don't respect the nature in so many ways. What you bring out you bring back. Problems with "basecamps"... Sherpas doing the hard work, mountenerining industry... Just the character of the people sadly. Keep up the work.
TQ! 🙏🏼 In the last year or so, I've been thru a steep learning curve wrt editing 🤓 Indeed. While people everywhere need to make a living, I hope that more sustainable ways of doing so can be found, so that local economies can benefit AND natural environments still be protected. Sadly, we fail in that in many locations around the world.
Yes, I agree. Further reducing (I think it was earlier on even higher than ~450) the number of hike permits would however negatively impact the local economy, so that may not happen. But, in my view, as an absolute minimum they need to fix their serious waste problem.
TQ for your kind comment 🙏🏼 I mostly use my GoPro Hero 10, and I find that its Auto WB works so much better than the Hero 4 that I earlier had. In my camera rig, I also carry an Olympus TG6 intended for Macro, but I haven't really got started on Macro video yet, so haven't used it much.. I'm now planning a dive trip dedicated to Macro (maybe Lembeh Strait) so I can practice it and hopefully get some decent result. Video is more challenging than strobe photo, I feel, but I'm gonna try.. 🤓🙂
Hey, Thank you for your helpful video. How did the Headnet go? Did any mosquitoes gone thru? I'm asking, cause I'm not sure whether I should take the ultra fine mesh or the ultralight version.
TQ for your kind comment 🙏🏼 My SeaToSummit Nano was sufficient for me, no mozzies got thru. Just have to wear a cap/hat that keeps the net at some distance from your skin. Enjoy your hike! When are you going? This year I'll go to Lofoten, but will surely be back to Sarek another year.
@@retireeinthewild-5905 Great thank's. Mid August this year. I plan to go for 6-7 Days. Either from Ritsem to Saltoluokta (crossing Spijkka) or from Aktse to Saltoluokta (alongside Rapadalen). Enjoy the Lofoten! A stunning area!
One of the great dives on my bucket list that I missed out on. Covid sure put a damper on my scuba desires. Wonderful video, just what you should do in retirement.
Not sure. We went in Dec, and at least one DM said that while it seems generally harder to find schools of Chevron Barracuda these days, going in ~May would probably increase the chance (and visibility will be better).
@@retireeinthewild-5905 I used to see a group of 2 feet barracuda storm around Mabul House Reef. Sipadan will be my bucket list after obtained AOW. Also waiting air asia launches direct flight from KK to Manado Sulawesi in Sep 2024.
Thankyou for the no bullshit gear walkthrough, more sensible thank most ultralight people. I recently sold all my Panasonic micro 4/3rds camera gear as I found it too heavy, that was only 1 KG :) But no tripod though, only a small pedco ultrapod i would strap to my hiking pole when I wanted something steady. I do miss setting up compositions and making proper pictures though..
Thanks for your interesting comment 🙏🏼 One motivation for me to at all go UL was that I've twice suffered from a herniated disc in my back, but I also value comfort and being able to actually enjoy a hike, so for me it's a case of trying to find the right balance. Soon gonna try out the new Nemo Moonlite Elite camp chair, to see if the extra camp comfort balances out carrying the extra weight. Cheers.
As I recall, when I last looked at portable solar panels, I found the possible power generation to be too low. E.g. 5-10W for a ~100-150g panel. I would have had to go up in size & weight to make it worthwhile, and then the extra weight carried would in my view have been too much of a 'gamble', coz enough sun light to get the rated W isn't guaranteed. I may later review the situation, but probably not for 2024.
Update: I realised it's the 6W version that weighs 140g, while the 18W is 390g, so I'll still wait with longer before getting a solar panel. Anyway, thanks for bringing up this interesting topic 🙏🏼
Wow this was wonderfully beautiful! Relaxed my whole body! Thanks for sharing this video. I loved learning new fish and enjoying such magnificent coral. I'll watch when ever you post.🙏👍🐟🐡🐠🐢🦈🥷
@@retireeinthewild-5905well we just subscribed and put all notifications on ...so we don't miss anything! Don't forget to post shorts.... always fun for us to watch 🎉 thanks again.
Great video! Amazing choice of music and cutting! I was at sipadan this summer and it was one of the gratest experiences in my entire life! Hope this video spreads so every human can see what diversity we have to protect underwater
You captured some great shots, did some great captions and put them to some great music. Can you tell I think you've done a GREAT video 😉. Well done I appreciate the time and effort you've gone to to bring this to us 👍. Views of the south arm of lake Te Anau made me reminisce of the days spent there on our boat over 40 years ago with my late father. Thankyou from Melbourne Australia.
TQ for your kind comment! 🙏🏼 My learning curve in shooting video & doing editing is still steep, and I feel I made a number of mistakes in this video that I hope to do better in future ones. So, to get your nice comment in spite of that is much appreciated and also motivational for me 😊 Cheers!
@@retireeinthewild-5905 Having done a few videos myself I understand your feeling that you could've done something better... it's a double edged sword that both motivates you to better but can also be demotivating as you're never completely satisfied 😐. Just take pleasure in the fact that 1) Isn't it great that you've always got something to learn and improve (else life would be boring) and 2) Your videos have brought lots of pleasure to others who otherwise wouldn't have got to see your life adventures. Don't worry things don't need to be perfect, I just appreciate your effort and time taken to share this with us 👍.
Nice video, really good foundation. For the duct tape, I store it wrapped around my hiking poles, keeps it handy and protected. Do you think the 4 nitecore are lighter than one larger capacity anker battery pack ? I started by carrying a smaller battery and a solar usb charger, but most recently swapped to only one larger battery which is fine for eight or even 10 days with just an iphone to charge.
TQ for your feedback 🙏🏼 I started out with 2 x 10kmAh Nitecore on an earlier, shorter hike, coz my thinking was, and still is, to never have just 1 single powerbank, for redundancy reasons, i.e. I'll never loose all of my recharge power at a failure. Besides my smartphone, I have batteries in 2 cameras, 1 mic, 1 sat device and sometimes 1 drone that I may need to charge. If 1 powerbank fails I can still charge but just have to prioritise which device(s). Then, for my Sarek hike it just so happened that I added 2 more of same Nitecore 10k mAh, but technically speaking I could prob have changed to 2 x 20mAh instead and maybe reduced a little bit of weight. Anyway, for now I can scale from min 2 x 10k mAh for a shorter hike, up to 4 x 10k mAh for a longer one 🤓
TQ for your kind feedback 🙏🏼 I've since noticed many mistakes in my editing choices, but it's also fun to gradually learn more & more about editing so can gradually improve the result. Happy Hiking! 🏕
Really enjoyed your hike video. One of the best Sarek videos I’ve seen. Flower identifications were great. This gear breakdown is detailed and also avery helpful. What kind of boots do you wear? Didn’t see a close-up but they look like Salewa?? Thank you for sharing👍🏻 🇨🇦
Nice boots. Meindl is a brand we do not often see in Canada. Unfortunately they only have retailers in the USA. I also need wide boots, so it’s good to know another recommended brand. Thanks and looking forward to your next adventure 👍🏻
TQ! 🙏🏼 I use OsmAnd Pro (paid subscription) and it's been sufficient for me wrt navigating (downloaded a number of maps around the world) and recording my trail. I also have the TopoGPS app (free version), with a map over the specific area I'm currently hiking, as it's sometimes easier to read or have more/different info than OSM.
Thanks, this brings back memories. I walked roughly the same route in 2019 (also made a video). It was nice to identify the plants and animals! I also had a ptarmigan (?) mother run away from me on a trail in Rapadalen, probably it was trying to lure me away from its nest. I failed to get it on film, but you succeeded 😂
TQ for your kind comment 🙏🏼 I'll later check out your video 👍🏻 Actually, out of several sudden 'encounters', that was the only Ptarmigan I at all managed to capture on video 🙂 (I was on MANUAL focus and was too slow when it started running away, so was first thinking I'll exclude that clip due to partially out-of-focus, but eventually included it anyway)
Season is May-Sep. Outside of that, the monsoon weather often brings too much wind, swell and/or rain, making it less suitable to visit. Many resorts are also closed during the rainy season and only open Apr/May - Sep/Oct. If you plan to visit, best to check directly with the resort you're aiming for. Good Luck!
