flying to southafrica to visit family, we always flew with virgin atlantic, on the 787-9, and hearing this is one of those special memories of flying on it, especially after flying 11 hours (KSFO-EGLL or EGLL-FAOR and vice versa)
For those who said the sound is annoying, for this flap, the sound is a must. Bcus this is to let the pilot knows whether the flap is moving or not. Without the sound, they will never know if the flap is down till the end
It is not actually hydraulic, the flaps are run by electric motors. The 787 has an electrical system that is run by 2 generators per engine, producing almost 1.25 mW of electrical energy
We used to jump off that train trestle you see as she's lining up on the runway, great video brings back tons of memories growing up right next door to runway 13R
I agreed. One of my favorite Boeing plane is the B787, BUT I really hate the hydraulic noise too. It's especially super loud if you sit in middle of the wings, like in the video. My second B787 flight was also on the similar seat like in the vid and it's super annoying. They made it so that the engine noise is so quiet now, but the hydraulic noise just defeat that purpose of reducing cabin noises. The sound of the flaps extending, by themselves isn't loud and normal like on any plane, but the hydraulic sound itself don't stop. I read on the google that even dog transported on a B787 had to go to a therapy session. Due to the high pitched noise. It's not loud if you are sitting behind the wings or in front with the engines view. If anyone tell you they actually like that non-stopping high pitch noise. They probably had never been on the B787 or on the wing seat or had their ears clogged from the pressure. It was making me go insane. It's not that bad in the video, even in the one I recorded from my flight. but IRL, it's bad. I enjoy loud plane engines sound too, like the B777 GE90. but this is NOT it. If you're aviation geeks who love plane engines noises then that's even more reason to dislike the noise, because it really drowns out the amazing [engines noise] that every aviation geeks love. The B787 engines noise is already low to begin with... But despite all this, I still love the B787. This problem can be solve if you select other seating. lol
It's the flap transmission Power Delivery Unit (PDU), sits in the middle of the aircraft and drives the transmission shafts to the flap actuators. Modern aircraft like A380 have 1 electric drive motor and 1 hydraulic drive motor, some aircraft have 2 hydraulic motors, they drive a differential gearbox which takes the drive down both wings, there will be another separate system for the slats, I think the flaps and slats often deploy together and so you probably hear both systems. The motor systems are independent from each other to give redundancy capability, so the flaps can be deployed on a single motor if there is a system failure. The noise you hear is the PDU motors and gearbox spooling up.
thats right lol flew on a 787 to California 2 weeks ago soon as she baked out the gate and pilot began checking the flaps this exact sound started and never stopped until after takeoff. noise returned while landing at LAX. its all good was a great experience awesome aircraft. 757 still my favorite though
@@hellswindstaff91 its the electric hydraulic pumps, they come on for flaps, landing gear, stay on till after takeoff to build and maintain hydraulic pressure
