West coast, cosmic folk, americana… Call it what you will - there are even hints of afro blues on the new album "Cosmos" - but where Darling West once fit firmly in the folk/americana category, you might as well just call it pop these days.
The listener is also awarded plenty of what we’ve come to love from the band: Mari Kreken’s gorgeous voice and Tor Egil Kreken’s incredibly versatile playing (guitar, bass, banjo, etc.) playing. The sum of these parts makes up a magical record, with songs and melodies that will stay on your mind for the unforeseeable future.
I just don't think this version adds anything to the quality of the original. It's like the song has had its soul removed and now its just noise for an advert. Which makes me sad for some reason.
I first heard this song while on my first day ever in Norway. The video was published just a day prior. I was sitting in the kitchen of my Airbnb hosts with an overview of a beautiful fjord. I am from Romania but I couldn't stop thinking how similar to the video my childhood was. Also, my mother is half Scandinavian but she never knew until recently. How surprising life is...
A testament: I blew my good speakers (no, really Dan? spiking the volume?) and have to listen on the really sad internal speakers -- and this STILL sounds great.
We do have a couple of really good musicians in Norway. I refuse to rate them as people do not like the same music. But I did meet this brilliant man 18 years ago..Ish. He was also a really nice man.
Wow. Very emotional for me especially seeing the home video. Makes me think of my dad who passed away last yr and missing him esp during the holidays. Thank you.
