I assume any superstar in Negro leagues would be superstars in MLB…but please, certain % stats like Battiing avg, Slugging % , OBP % ERA, all can t fairly be compared for a 60 game/yr season to 154 game season. When u play that many games, the numbers change. I’m sure Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige would have been at the very apex of MLB in their primes
As was in little league as a little kid , and a lefty I naturally could throw the screwball and I was always curious why I was used as a pitcher. I wasnt a fast ball pitcher. Lol And each game I pitched I would absolutely feel a terrible pain in my elbow. And to this day in my 50’s. I can feel it anytime I throw to this day. A fun throw that I didn’t understand as a kid the way I should. It’s just a painful throw. But fun !!!

I don’t quite understand your criteria. The point of a Hall of Fame is preserving the FAMOUS. In his time Bruce Sutter was the most famous reliever in baseball. Furthermore, he played in a different era of pitching. He wasn’t a one-inning closer. He never started a single major league game, but threw over 100 innings 5 times (80+ IP in 10 consecutive seasons). That means he pitched multiple innings in many more games where he wasn’t eligible for a save than a modern pitcher would. Holding a reliever of that era to an arbitrary 400 save standard is ludicrous.

I remember the catchers using bigger gloves, and still not being able to handle some Knuckleballs. Imagine a pitch that when thrown right is that tough just to catch, let alone hit! It also was supposed to put less wear and tear on a pitcher's arm.

Black players were taken in to the Hall of Fame every years throughout the 1980's., to the point where they were inducting guys no one had seen play! The stats are not accurate, as far as saying this is their recognition, that is untrue, they are already in the Hall of Fame. They are also featured. many documentaries on baseball. They have screwed up the stats. The MLB stats were accurate, no one knows Josh Gibson's real stats.
If 10 years is the minimum, then perhaps lifetime stats need to be scaled-down accordingly. This is especially true for players, like Munson, whose careers were cut short by circumstances beyond their control. You know, like dying. 10 years is the HoF rule, so a ten year career that is HoF quality and isn't ended by, say, something scandalous, is long enough of a career to demonstrate a player's worthiness. Right?

I learned to throw it at age 14, and got good around 16, it was funny to see my friends try to catch it. I would throw it to first from a ground ball just to fuck with them and to practice. Pretty sure I broke a neighbors window throwing a knuckler. On a perfect weather day, clouds and a slight breeze that knuckler would dance.
