Dad was in band with Erroll at Westinghouse. Dad brought him to brushton hill to replay rolls of music on the old upright that belonged to mom’s family. (Erroll played tuba in the high school band). Then off to dads to play the electric grand/player piano. Again, as the first time on brushton hill, after the roll finished, Erroll played it note for note on the grand. Dad remained friends. We attended his funeral back in homewood..flowers from big stars. We were the only white people. Imagine that. My favorite: His own version of “don’t be that way” Ps, I visit him on his birthday at homewood cemetery
This has to be absolutely the best recording of this beautiful song. I am a very big fan of Johnny Mercer -he was such a incredible talented and gifted lyricist! I will bet that no one knows that he wrote this song originally about his love for Judy Garland! The song was called "Judy"! Two years later the words were changed to"Laura" for the same movie. He was hopelessly in love with Judy Garland for many years. He also wrote "That Old Black Magic" describing his love and her hypnotic, fascinating trance she always had over him!
