Hi. It's not A.I, green screen or digital manipulation or puppetry. The elephant is real and it is painting.

I have always wanted a pet elephant. I have been to India many times and see a guy walking down the road with his elephant and I get jealous! I knew they were smart, but painting... WOW! Think of the ramifications. Choosing color, type of brush, types of stroke, and planning the picture by seeing in her head then putting it on canvas. It is really almost unbelievable.
@ThaiAussies
@ThaiAussies 3 дня назад
To give some perspective. Suda was trained to paint by repeating various types of stroles with the assistance of her Mahout. So the elephant will know which way to paint, up, down, left, right, softly, harder stroke by the way the Mahout, pulls or pushes the elephants trunk / tusk. All the same it is quite an amazing thing, the communication skills between elephant and its trainer.

Maravilloso!!!!!!!

Does the elephant also read and write?
@ThaiAussies
@ThaiAussies 3 дня назад
Good question. They can recocnize certain shapes and symbols but most likely unable to read and write, even to the most simplistic level. May possibly be able to make a certain stroke for 'yes' and another for 'no' when asked a very simple question similar to what we might ask our pets.

It is a combined effort. Does that make it fake or any less real that the elephant is holding the brush and putting it to canvas? Depends on what your epectations and perspective are, I suppose.

The brush looks inserted into the trunk by humans.. the animal's trunk is often shaking like from fear? I am uncomfortable watching it and feel it would be naive to also believe the animal was untrained but rather it was forced. Poor creature...all this done for money 💰 😢
@ThaiAussies
@ThaiAussies 3 дня назад
The brush has a t-piece attached to it. The trunk has soft muscles like a lip which can wrap around the t-piece. So, when looking at it from the side or front it looks as though it is inserted into the trunk. The elephant uses these muscles to grip and pick up things which are small. The shaking you see is not from fear, but from steadying the brush.

To train the elephant to move the brush to create stroke patterns that we recognize as flowers, trees, or even an elephant, the mahouts use these painful prods to guide the elephant's movements. Further, if an elephant paints incorrectly, they are beaten, either with a bullhook or physically hit on their head or trunk.
@ThaiAussies
@ThaiAussies 3 дня назад
Where did you see this happen? Can you please provide the details? I have only seen Mahouts use their hands for guiding the paint strokes. It would be quite cumbersome to use a bull hook to guide the strokes in any kind of meaningful way to do a decent painting.

I have lived in Thailand for 17 years and am intimately involved with elephant rescue sanctuaries. Every elephant in Thailand, with very rare exceptions, that is trained for entertainment, riding, or labor, have been taken away from their mothers at an early age and put through a prolonged process of 'breaking' the elephant's will through traumatizing pain and fear. This is a long standing process called Phajaan (Crushing), where a mother's love is replaced by pain and fear. Once the elephant is broken and compliant, then further 'training' takes place with a hook to inflict yet more pain. When the elephants are not performing they are often chained, away from the eyes of the public. A terrible life. This video is being used to glorify this elephant's talent and to perpetuate this practice for profit. Tourists need to wake up and BOYCOTT any and all elephant shows, riding, and any venue that puts elephants in any situation other than living in their natural environment. Please practice due diligence and patronize bonafide sanctuaries, which are usually 'look but don't touch' venues, allowing elephants to be elephants in their natural habitat with companions.Elephant do enjoy painting but are merely doing what they were trained to do under duress and the threat of pain. They would prefer to live in a proper sanctuary and never feel chains or hooks again. Let's promote the welfare of these majestic creatures. Feel free to fact check everything I've written. Look up Phajaan (Crushing). Please donate to Elephant Rescue Foundations if you're able. Don't contribute to their misery. Thank You for your consideration in becoming part of the movement to improve the lives of these gentle giants by allowing them to live with the dignity they deserve. Make the world a better place.

Elephants are one of the very rare species that have shown the ability to understand that they are seeing themselves when looking into a mirror. They are conscious of their own image. This is proven by a quite famous experience called the mirror test. Only elephants, some chimpanzees and some orangutans, certains varieties of dolphins, and a few birds like the crows and ravens can pass this test successfully. So I think that indeed elephants should be able to paint if well trained, because they are able to represent themselves mentally.
@ThaiAussies
@ThaiAussies 3 дня назад
It's more mechanical and from memory rather than interpreting the things they see and painting them. They may be able to understand simple symbols and paint them with assistance, possibly. eg one paint stroke to mean 'yes' and two to mean 'no' in answer to a very simple question like 'do you want bananas'?
