"Oceans were 80ft higher" Do math. Melt all the ice volume on the planet and spread it on top of the oceans. You get 50cm tops.
@DonCDXX
@DonCDXX 3 дня назад
I just googled it to check. It says if all the ice on earth melted, the sea level would be 200ft higher.
@ZipMapp
@ZipMapp 3 дня назад
@@DonCDXX Volume of ice: 158'000 km3 Volume of converted water (ratio 0.92): 148'000 km3 Surface of oceans: 361 million km2 Added height = Volume/Surface height = 148'000/361'000'000 (unit will be km by simplification of units). = 148/361 (Unit is now meter as I put the factor 1000 inside from the km unit) = 0.40m = 40cm. All oceans are connected so Surface of oceans is the correct denominator. Volume of ice on earth is an upperbound as not all ice is connected to oceans and not all ice is going to melt. So I also saw your answer on google from US.gov but some math ain't mathing here. What could explain a bigger rise is thermal expansion of the ocean water. This would represent roughly 80cm per °C. But that is not the topic.
@DonCDXX
@DonCDXX 3 дня назад
@@ZipMapp You're definitely trying to think your way through this so I mean no disrespect when I say this, but I suspect there's a problem with your calculations. I'm going to do the calculations for all land ice melting under the assumption of a full carboniferous level co2 level. Antarctica has about 30 mil km3 and Greenland has about 3 mil km3 of ice. The oceans are about 1.3 bil km3 of water. For ease of calculation, we'll just have ice expansion and thermal expansion of water cancel out. That's about a 2% increase in ocean volume. Not massive but not trivial. If we don't get into the details on topography and do a lazy estimate on ocean depth, a 2% increase in volume translated directly to a 2% increase in depth (average ocean depth being 3.6 km) gives us about 70m of additional depth. There's obviously a lot more complexity to it, but this seems like a fair rough estimate. 70m extra depth while rounding down on almost every part of the calculation.
@ZipMapp
@ZipMapp 3 дня назад
@@DonCDXX But that's incorrect, you can just put the extra water at the top, therefore surface area.

Okay, from a purely scientific standpoint, we’re not in this scenario YET… but it won’t be long if we don’t act fast. Basically, with the advent of CO2 storage/containment facilities - to take out the CO2 already in the atmosphere (since it just stays there once it’s up there, that’s where the warming comes from) - we’ve bought ourselves a little more time, but only if we expand them and underwater agriculture/grazing fast.

There was this one show of george carlin, where he says we humans are far too arrogant to think we can save the earth. The earth can heal itself. We are selfish beings. We are not doing all this to save the earth. We are doing this to save our own skin. Maybe it is high time human beings go extinct. Good riddance really! Its appalling the level of damage we have already done. Let other species who though simple, atleast know how to live in harmony with nature.

When he said, "the person has already been born that will die from climate catastrophe", did you think he meant that person would die before the age 10? The estimate for when things start getting really bad is between 2050 and 2100. That's the beginning of serious repercussions according to actual peer reviewed research papers.

@@DeNorsemen I understand that, but it obviously will be sustainable. People will die in the process, and that is tragic but the collective causes of climate change save more lives than climate change will take. Climate change will increase plant life and create more forest and farmable land. I feel terrible for the people who will be negatively affected, but far more will be positively affected.
@DeNorsemen
@DeNorsemen 19 дней назад
@@michaelwalsh601 lol thats not how that works kiddo. We already have water shortages making it hard for this fantasy “more plant life” of yours to exist…parts of the world are becoming inhabitable for humans meaning they will migrate where water is…further depleting water sources. Meaning even less water to grow food. You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how things work. The time frames you are referring too weren’t overrun by humans with factories polluting and taking massive amounts of resources. Look up how much water is used to create a micro-chip and how farming is becoming scarce. Your comparing normal climate change to human driven climate change. Apples to oranges…its literally what scientists are trying to explain to people like you, the data is against you.
