To me, it encapsulates and musically manifests the aspects of determination, romance(the beauty-in-all-things kind) and the cruel duality of NieR's story. It speaks to me of a mixture of love and pride that fuels unbreakable dignity in the face of tragic, heart-breaking defeat, and unbreakable determination to continue to fight well past the departure of any reasonable hope. Strong and inspiring feelings! And then it also speaks to me of a similar mixture that is conversely FILLED with hope. The creeping anticipation of the first half is where this hope is; it radiates this feeling of breaking through insurmountable odds and the fearful excitement that surges up from inside your stomach when you close in on a difficult, hard-fought victory. The slowness is like the sun dawning on the horizon, as if to signal an end to troubles, and yet... As verse goes on and nears its end, however, dread sets in. The organs warn you of doom and I can only think of this as NieR's conscience telling him the full picture. He's won, but something's so wrong about this picture. Victory is coming with a cost: two lives, just like his own and the one he's tried and fought so hard to save-- the one that matters more to him than any other in the world: his sister. The choice is clear, but it will pain him nonetheless. And as verse three begins it takes on a sound of frantic desperation; the speed increases and the other instruments come alive; the perspective is now his opponent's: Your sister is gone. One thousand years of holding her soul close and protecting her, keeping her from fading through your fingers to nothing, telling her it will be okay... that one day it will go back to how things were. That you both can still have a chance at life. That hope is all that's kept the both of you going until now... You were still pretty much kids when you were denied real lives and doomed to a millennium of suffering and agonizing nothingness. Cruel doesn't even begin to describe it. Nor does unfair. Words could never be enough to do that because now, after all of that, after all your promises and struggling she's gone. It's doubtful you could even save her now because she's given up; she's so pure and innocent, more than you could ever be and you love her for that, so kind-hearted that she couldn't pay the price of someone else's life to live like you are willing to do-- not that it's so simple, you'd think, it's not fair you and your sister draw the short stick. One thousand years. Your mind can't even comprehend how long you've waited. You think it's driven you to insanity. You wonder what it's done to your sister. She gave up. You fought but were beaten back. She says they're in pain like you and her. She couldn't take it and let them win. She's gone. The music pairs with this despair so well as the Shadowlord gets back up even after his sister fades away for good, becoming nothing for eternity ever after having never really lived and only struggled. He digs deep into himself and musters every last bit of strength he has left to continue to fight. It doesn't matter that all seems to be lost, he'll die before he gives up on her, and the surging music plays fittingly alongside his final, insane, grief-driven struggle, likely destroying himself because his attacks are stronger than they were during any other time during the whole fight and he's been battered and slashed at almost to death at this point. He fights with the entirety of his soul with blind, desperate fury to kill the one who took his sister's (and his own) chance at life away as if that might bring her back somehow. The music fades abruptly, not finishing, because he didn't finish. It ends suddenly, in the middle of things, after so much struggling... and for nothing. His light sputters out in a violent, final flash, gone forever. At least it's over.
By combining Nier's white hair with Shadow Lord's black hair, he kind of looks like a wicked male version of Disney's Cruella Deville now but much darker and more demonic looking.
2:38 From here it feels like I’m having a dance battle with Shiva The Destroyer with my life on the line, like the original… _But NOW we’re both on crack to up the challenge._
Is it just me or this song is taking my soul to another realm i feel a strange feeling towards this song it's scary yet irresistible can't get enough of it
Hmm, well now I feel a bit foolish-- I could have sworn the brass and bass/tenor chanting was unique to the White Snow arrangements, but I'm not sure. I realizing I'm now comparing original Nier (2010) OST with White Snow in my head. I'll need to get back to you on this.
If anything, I'm feeling like the White Snow Arrangement is a bit of a rip-off. I was so blown away by it when I first heard it, but it might just be they added the music box...
Buena buena... Desde que las escuché en una radio alemana me encantaron. Y mi hermano pilló ambos juegos,Automata y Replicant. Las escucho mucho en el trabajo.
