Do not swim where you see the most surfers starting their paddle out. We use the rips to our advantage.

2:22 He's not even swimming properly, lol. He's just flapping his hand around a bit. This rip doesn't seem so strong, I bet he could have made it back if not for the pretent swimming. Thus proving that sometimes you should swim against the rip. I rest my case.

Good Call It was really low tide when I filmed this so it wasn't as bad when at high tide. Nobody had picked this out. Still you get the message!

Just yesterday, i was pulled by rip current in a moroccan atlantic beach with high weaves when i tried to come back after swiming like a 150 meter... I always swim and been through rip currents and can swim 3 km...but ystrdy it was very difficult and felt like if it will never end, i tried to swim sideways...went with it again tried sideways...i was totally stuck and begin to be tired and no swimming theory could help... I tried to relax though the panic was like i hv never experienced...thanks to God there were some surfers away from me, i screamd and wistled to them....finaly with their help i was out, and never rerurned ... It was really a bad experience that i have never expected...

I think they should add the word "parallel", "side by side to the beach", cuz it's too scary for me to say 'I'm gonna just let this current take me wherever" but I can relax a little and allow it to pull me alongside parallel to the beach until it releases me from clutches.

Born and raised on Maui. I am not a lifeguard, but there is no way in hell that I wouldn't jump in the ocean to help someone in need local or visitors. It's just how it is. I know my ocean, it is a beast. It's at the point where my friends and I are looking at each other saying who's turn now for rescue someone. It's my responsibility to do it, my ocean it is what it is just the way I grew up. All I ask is to educate yourself, read magazines, newspapers, listen to local news/surf cast. No be shame for ask questions, asking questions WILL safe your life. Use common sense.

Good video! White wash coming in good. Blue water, clam water bad! It's a rip current. Stay calm, relax, don't fight it swim across it left or right. #1 rule If in doubt don't go out.

@@BillyWarpinjur thank YOU, for this video. People underestimate the ocean, on a calm day the beast(ocean) will open up and test you. Never turn your back on the ocean. If in doubt, don't go out. If you can help rescue do so,if not get as much attention as you can so others who can rescue will see you. Take a few minutes before you go in the ocean and look/study the ocean, she will tell you how she's feeling. Ask questions, locals/lifeguards even that 10 year old kid that's dropping bombs or getting hammered in shore break. Guarantee that 10 year old has been dropping bombs/hammered by shore break since he/she been in diapers. Ask questions! Listen to the lifeguards. If you don't see locals in the ocean, there's a reason so don't go in. Rip current: relax, be calm, don't panic, don't fight it, take a good breath and swim parallel to the rip. If tired, relax, be calm, don't panic, don't fight it. Yell! Wave your hands vigorously get as much attention as you can so people will see you. If you see someone in distress 911 is your best friend. Do whatever you can to get as much attention as you can so lifeguards can get there quickly. Use common sense.

Panic and fatigue from fighting RIP currents causes most drownings . Floating with it may take you further out but will not fatigue you. Wait for a land bound swell only to make incremental progress as a body surfer would catching a wave if you angularly ride waves you will get out of the RIP. You may end up at an adjoining beach from where you entered but no matter you have used the oceans strength to your favor . Dont try to fight her undertow by attempting to stand in a RIP. Stay surface planed and look for that swell 🌊to ride safely to shore Preventively, examine currents before entering for side sweeps ,undertows, and rips. 🙌🙏⛑🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♂️🌬🧜‍♂️🧜‍♀️🏖🛑✅⚕ Rips occur most often because of the accretion of a sand bar that erodes breaks causing a fierce rushing undertow. You can try to spot them by wading first- you will feel the backwash strength . This may be more noticeable prior to low tide . So that's another thing you can check what is the days high and low tides. Lunar events effect tides . Be safe be aware hold your finger up in the air .

Possibly the best video on RC's I've seen. 40 years ago I used to swim off Whitesands Bay, West Wales with a friend, this beach is famed for surfing and is known to be dangerous; we used to 'dare' to swim out to the mast of an old wreck which only got exposed at very low tides. Once we found ourselves unable to get back to shore despite all efforts, some instinct told us to parallel the shore for a while, this took us very close to another danger in the form of an outcrop of rocks but somehow we made it back utterly exhausted! Another time I was on the same beach and I forgot to check the tide times, I was alone in a small cove beyond the rocks I mentioned earlier, the tide had come into the cove but not yet the main beach...I had to swim for it, around those rocks. So there are 2 incidents which I managed to survive but then I'd never heard of a rip then!

Question how far can it take u out to the sea if u just stay afloat?
@BillyWarpinjur
@BillyWarpinjur 3 года назад
It all depends on the size of the rip current and also where you are. Ocean conditions are different so swim by a lifeguard. They are trained for their local conditions. If there aren’t any lifeguards around and it’s rough, stay out of the water!

does rip currents always happen in the same place in the beach since they are connected with sand bars as i understand.
@BillyWarpinjur
@BillyWarpinjur 3 года назад
Not with sandbars as the sand shifts. With reefs they will generally stay the same due to a solid reef floor.
