hANLEY gave that right side potential...and teams had not worked out his left step and press with his left arm...he was a charm and Tigers were dominating that grand final till he was mysteriously taken out...Scot Gale was weak defensively and Bulldogs exploited it....what is this comment below about his beloved Canberra...Everyone knows Harrigan was the first of the grand stand finish referees and the penalty against Bruce McGuire still makes no sense.
There have been a few players with Asian heritage play first grade. Craig Wing's mother is from the Philippines, while Shaun Johnson's mother is from Laos.
Lol I remember going to the games at Henson park by way via the men’s toilets which was up on the hill across the oval from the grandstand ,my mates dads house was literally behind the wall of the toilets and he had a big pigeon coupe on the wall and we used to climb up the coup and wait for the guys to finish having a piss and climb down the pipes of the cistern , never missed a game I must say and saw some good players back then pity they got rid of blue bags
I sold cornettos at at Henson Park in the late 70s. People were always happy and because the ice creams owed me 70-80c a unit, i was going home with stacks of 1 and 2 dollar notes 😆
Grew up in Tempe and spent my primary school years going all over Sydney to support the bluebags. So much fun at Henson Park though. Whether yelling out "lolly legs" as the opposition made a goal attempt, sliding down the hill on cardboard sheets, or inching onto the field in the final minutes, in the hopes of snatching a corner post. The only time I was ever first to one though, it was almost instantly ripped in half by some bigger kid.
I saw them play Guildford in their first game back after about 8 years when they were readmitted at Erskineville Oval in (I think 1991). Chicka Moore was on the gate its theme was "Back to Bluebags Day". Maybe 1500 there. They had Barry Russell, Fred Teasdell, John Ferguson and maybe Michael Speechley playing. They won and Chicka scored. It was a great day. There were needless to say some "heavy" looking characters watching on. My mate put it succintly "spot the crim". Ha ha ha
I caught the supporter bus down to Canberra for this game and sat in the corner bay with all of the Balmain fans. I still have this jersey, still with tags, unworn. I have quite a few of this style so I decided not to wear it and then it just stayed unworn. I can’t remember if I bought it through the club or via a special order at Peter Wynn’s Score? I wish I could remember how I got hold of it. For ages it was in a plastic Canterbury package, which I’ve never seen for a rugby league jersey before or since then. Great jersey. The only one of that style with an NRL logo.
You’re right. It was the 1969 Balmain re-issue issue I had to order through Peter Wynn’s. I must’ve bought it through the club at the same time as I bought my supporter bus ticket.
This is proper rare. Canberra were always sort of the bane of Balmain's existence and now that has kind of transcended onto the Wests Tigers. Of course you had the 1989 Grand Final, then Balmain's last ever game in the NRL was against Canberra where they got battered. There was also a game a couple of year ago where Wests Tigers had to beat Canberra on the final day to reach the playoffs but Canberra battered them at Leichhardt Oval.
The Raiders also wore their heritage strip from 1989 in this match but with a white regular collar instead of the white v neck from '89. Also, an extremely rare Raiders jersey to find.
@robm9770 I've never found the game on RU-vid or anywhere else but the Jersey can be found on the Raiders website if you google Raiders 40 years Jersey competition. It's a real beauty.
Good video Steven. I got to play with Illawarra Steelers for '84 & 85 in lower grades. All my playing memorabilia of 2 real jerseys, shorts and several training t-shirts were stolen off clothes line in 86. Great crew of players and many fond memories. Adam
The jerseys were better back then. It shows when you put Balmain's as the worst, when in fact it's not even that bad, it's a good jersey. The Gold Coast one was possibly the ugliest jersey ever though.
Marone they should have stuck with the simplistic strip as their home jersey year-in year-out, best representation of both clubs and they still haven't gotten it right.
