I wonder if there is a difference between East Coast New England area oysters and how to shuck then from the West Coast. Having shucked probably well over sixty thousand oysters each year working at a seafood restaurant on the Cape every year as a teen (and I had the forearms and grip strength to prove it) I can honestly say that I never shucked an oyster the way that you are doing it as that is the strongest part of the shells connection. Help me understand how wand why you were taught that way.

Why you didnt take the ones trapped in the bag
@genjster
@genjster Год назад
The oysters in the bag are someone else's private property. They are usually planted by someone living on the water near the beach.
@yo6687
@yo6687 Год назад
@@genjster but their trapped in a bag on the ground in a park
@genjster
@genjster Год назад
@@yo6687 similar to someone else's car being parked on a public road ... just because it's parked on a public road, doesn't mean you can take what's inside the car. Taking the oysters would be considered illegal poaching.
@yo6687
@yo6687 Год назад
@genjster that's a little different though because these oysters are wild animals trapped in a man made bag on the ground in a public park
@genjster

@@yo6687 the oyster seeds are actually purchased and then placed in the bag, so not really wild. But if you have any further questions, you should contact WDFW, since they are the government agency that enforces the applicable rules and regulations. Thanks!

Where u get that boat from?
@genjster
@genjster Год назад
The boat brand is Porta-Bote. The company is located in Canada, but they sell them at boat shows and ship them to the U.S.A. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find a used one from Craigslist or one of the other online marketplaces.

I’m a regular at la fondita. The amount of food they give you for 15$ or so is a great value! That’s why I keep coming back and the food is consistent
@genjster
@genjster Год назад
Yes, I agree! La Fondita is a great value and their meats are very good. If I lived closer to White Center, I would definitely be going there more often. The Best Roasted Corn Stand next door is also a bonus.

Also I dont see how the oysters are able to sustain the people who catch them if you guys are harvesting over the same oyster beds? Are the oysters all harvested in that same area or were they further out near the waters edge?
@genjster
@genjster Год назад
The oyster beds are fairly far out on the beach, so you can only reach them during low tides. The oyster beds cover a fairly large area, although a good portion of the bed are empty shells (the law requires you to leave the shells on the beach to help propagate future oysters). There's also a legal limit to how many oysters a person can harvest.
@MuddyBootsOutdoors
@MuddyBootsOutdoors Год назад
what kind of oyster are those that were caught?

I'm not positive, but I believe they were Pacific Oysters. That's a common variety in Puget Sound.

@@genjster have y’all tried Maiz Molino? I’ve seen a few recommendations for it. My apologies if you already made a video about it. Haven’t had a chance to go through em yet.
@genjster
@genjster Год назад
@@ContrerasCorner Sorry, we've never been to Maiz Molino, but it looks good. Fyi ... a Mexican restaurant on my "next to try list" is Asadero, which is a Mexican steakhouse with 2 locations: Asadero Ballard in Seattle and Asadero Prime in Kent (about 20 miles south of Seattle). I've heard good things about their carne asada and wagyu tacos. Please note that Asadero is in the $$$ range, so it's more expensive than Maiz Molino. Ballard is a cute neighborhood with a very good Ballard Farmers Market on Sundays, and also the Ballard Locks (you can watch boats pass through the locks and it's one of Seattle's most popular free attractions -- just be sure to read the parking signs and pay for parking if required). Have fun while visiting Seattle!

We ended up visiting Snoqualmie Falls and in the town they had a really good Oaxacan restaurant (Caadxi Oaxac). If y’all ever make the drive there. We just ate the Mole and we did eat the Molina. They do have a spot at Pikes market as well , next door to the first Starbucks.

It was definitely a bit strange walking through Pacific Place and seeing a lot of the empty retail spaces. I heard there were plans to convert some of the retail spaces to office spaces, but not sure when that's going to happen. Would be nice to see more food vendors, since that tends to attract more people and creates a more lively atmosphere.

Great show 👍 do the bigger crab fight off smaller crabs it looked like you had more with less soak time? Looks like the crabs could fall out when getting them out.
@genjster
@genjster 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment! Yes, crabs do fight in the cage sometimes. But they are usually too busy eating. 🤣 if there are a lot of crabs around, then soak times can be really short. Otherwise, you might have to increase soak time to an hour or more. The smaller crabs can fall out of the pot while pulling it up, but they are usually under the size limit anyways.

Thanks for the comment. Sorry for the late reply. If you are still in town, you should try Cafe Allegro for coffee/expresso (located at 4214 University Way NE). It's a bit hidden, since the entrance is located in the alley between University Way NE and 15th Ave NE (between NE 42nd St and NE 43rd St). Cafe Allegro is Seattle's oldest expresso bar and they roast their own coffee.
