Welcome to Whidbey! You will love it. I promise! Yes, the housing market is a pain… I am so sorry. Don’t give up. I know that your home is waiting for you to find it. The real estate cabal is trying their best to creat another bubble. A lot of folks from California are buying on the south end and paying California prices for homes. You may want to ask around the base. Sometimes families who are transferring out will be willing to sell or rent out their homes at more reasonable prices. If you end up buying down south and you’re looking for a good church, checkout South Whidbey Assembly. Tell Pastor Matt “John from Malaysia says hi!”. BTW, I’m a retired Boeing engineer who worked on the P-8. Your husband couldn’t be flying in a safer aircraft.
I love it! I did a move from Jax to Whidbey Island some years ago. I ended up driving more the center of the US. Went north and then cut over west. I've since moved back east as I am military and they moved me all around the US. I loved Whidbey. I miss crossing Deception Pass when I left the island. Can't believe they shut down Burlington Mall. For all my major shopping I'd drive as far as Lynnwood. Hope you guys enjoy the time you have left there.
I moved there 20 something years ago for my ex husbands job in the military. Our son grew up there. My son graduated high school and moved to a different state. My ex husband and I separated and I’m now living in another state by myself and far far away from my son. I used to hate Oak Harbor because there was really not much to do there, but I knew I would miss it the minute we moved out and here I am, missing it like crazy. To the younger generations, enjoy every minute of your lives because time goes by very very fast. It’s important to provide for your family, but without forgetting that the most important thing in life is to be with your loved ones, love them, embrace them while you can. I still technically own a house there. It’s the only thing that still connects me to Whidbey.
Definitely trying to enjoy this place while we are here!!! Even though it’s cold and yeah Oak Harbor is still a small town, in the summer this area can be super fun so trying to focus on that and stay present enjoying it!
Did you have the option of flying there and getting you car shipped? This is going to be my first duty station and my family current live in West Palm Beach Florida.
WOW, Officers def have better perks than I did as an enlisted back in 99-01. Only got a 2 bedroom for the wife and I with 1 child. But a nice house for sure! The housing rules must have changed a lot since I got out.
Yeah i think we got pretty lucky with this house. It’s obviously to big for us but I don’t think they really plan out who gets what it seems like whatever is available when you arrive is what you get for better or worse
@@RachelBurkholder Trust me, that's not a bad thing. Guess since the housing has gotten so bad up there. It's fair to surmise they want as many living on base as possible. Plus when they went to privatization in the mid to late 2000's it was out of the Navy's hands to a point.
I did the opposite. I went from Whidbey to JAX. Whidbey was my 1st duty station in 1999! I miss being up there! The base housing on Seaplane overlooking the marina used to be old 1940/50's Officer housing. But the view was great. I was the last one to move before they tore it down and put up the new housing there.
welcome to NAS Whidbey...retired Navy O6 about to be a test pilot for boeing in the well P8 so we are at different ends of the career well. :) My oldest daughter is a USN F35 driver. congratulations to your husband for his wings and for the two of you for the move :) BZ are you still happy at Whidbey? safe flights Robert
My wife and I are moving to Whidbey in November. Not ready for this drive from VA to TX to Whidbey… but your video just got us excited about it. Glad y’all made it safely! Great video
My husband is penciled in to go there in August..were currently in Norfork va..but we're excited for a cross country trip..going to stop and sight see along the way
@@panthergal7399 not to do a smless plug but my wife and I made a whole RU-vid series about out cross country trip 😬. We didn’t do the conventional trip though we were all over the place lol.don’t listen to the rumors though, Whidbey is beautiful!
Thank you for sharing. Having grown up on Whidbey Island and since transplanted to California via Colorado, I find myself reliving your hike like it was only yesterday since I'd been there even though it has actually been near 30 years. I can close my eyes and can relive every step. I hope you're enjoying your stay. I do find myself missing it so much sometimes.
Wow just moved here too for my husband's duty station too, it's so beautiful. U should check out Washington Park in Anacortes for ur vlog it's sooo pretty, needs some attention lol
Oh that’s so exciting!!! He is an O2, dude the housing market here is nuts. Honestly my advice is live on base or buy a tiny house. DM me and we can chat more if y’all need info on the area!
Hi.....I was born and raised on Whidbey Island. I graduated from Oak Harbor High School and both sides of my family have lived there since the 1800's. I live in Arlington WA now. Your videos are so cute!
Hi! That is so cool you and your family have such a long history here! It’s a super interesting place with so many stories to tell. If you have any recommendations I’d love to hear them of things to do, places to eat, or thing to learn about this area!
@@RachelBurkholder Definitely check out Ft. Casey and Coupeville. There have been a couple movies filmed in Coupeville. Take the bluff hike at Ebeys landing. Eat at Toby's Tavern. In August Coupeville has a huge arts and crafts festival but I don't know when they will have it again now with Covid. Anacortes has a whole city street yard sale called shipwreck. In Mill Creek down towards Seattle they have a whole city garage sale the first weekends in October and in May. Check out Leavenworth on Hwy 2. It is a German themed town with a lot of food and shops. It gets a lot warmer there in the summer than in Oak Harbor. Take the Monte Cristo hike off of the mountain loop highway. You will need a parking pass for that. Horseshoe Cove at baker Lake is where we like to camp but usually you need to reserve a spot in January or February. Port Townsend and Fort Warden is fun. Oak Harbor usually had a music festival that is a lot of fun. Double bluff beach at the south end of the island is a nice sandy beach and has an off leash dog area. The parking is terrible on busy days. When I think of more I'll let you know. I hope this wasn't too much.
@@helpingkarma oh m gee you’re awesome!!! Thank you so much I am saving all of these for later! I love garage sales so I’m so excited to hear about that. And no way I will always take all the suggestions and recommendations your the best!
So Im really interested in moving here with my children....no military connection. But I would love an interview of school ages children with their experience with school there and the pros and cons of others that have moved there...oh and shopping I love local artists and little shops.
I moved here with my husband and our two small children about 2 months ago. No military connection, just absolutely wanted out of California.. absolutely no regrets. We love it! My daughter absolutely loves her school and we spend just about every bit of extra time we have at the beach. The few things that didn't take much adjusting.. island life.. you have what you have or you're driving 45-50 minutes off the island (depending on which part of the island). And the weather in winter is cold, wet and unpredictable. But it's absolutely beautiful in the spring, and we don't mind the cold weather. It's a nice slow pace, very low in crime, kiddos in elementary go back to school full time in a week.. it's just all around been a wonderful change for my family. 😊
@@RachelBurkholder We moved her from Cali. My husband has an aunt here and she always posts these amazing pictures, so my husband found a job and we packed up everything and came here. Definitely a last minute decision lol. What about you?
@@jeniceparker9568 oh that’s amazing! I love last min decisions lol they make life so exciting! We are here bc my hubs is in the Navy so we are stationed here the next 3 years
YES!! It took me a while to learn to remember to check second hand first but once you do it's the best! It doesn't always work out magically as this day did but sometimes the stars align!
