Thank you, and all of your viewers who have served in the military. I did not serve, but my father was in the Navy from 1943 till 1963. I like to make a point of thanking Veterans whenever possible.
@OliveDrabAlliance
@OliveDrabAlliance 21 час назад
I really should do that more. I never served in combat. My only overseas military duty was to Panama in 1997 and that was more like a tropical vacation than anything else. Technically, I am a veteran, but I do not consider myself a veteran. So, I'm a little confused about thanking people for their service. On one hand I want to and on the other, is that just something people who did not serve do? I really honestly don't know.

About 3 yrs ago I Frankenstein attached this bag to a 1970’s belt and padded shoulder straps. With a small bag for water, and another for shotgun shells, it worked great. The problems I had was the shoulder straps were too padded to shoulder an antique SxS, and the bag itself was so over designed that the kit weighed a ton. So I went with a German surplus set up. Much thinner and lighter. However, this bag will last FOREVER.

I'm ex-British Territorial Army (forerunner to the Army Reserves). It's called a "Respirator haversack". Anyone calling it a "gas mask" would normally find themselves doing strenuous PT for HOURS 🤣 As to the velcro: If you're on the receiving end of CBW then who the hell cares if it makes some noise? ;)
@OliveDrabAlliance
@OliveDrabAlliance День назад
Yeah, my drill Sergeants would have taken me onto "The Happy Room" for calling it a gas mask .. (happy to get out of the happy room). And you, along with others bring up an excellent point, in an NBC attack the velcro noise would be the least of your concerns. Very very true. I only bring it up for people looking to repurpise this piece of kit. Thank you and I appreciate you & what you say more than you'll ever know

Vaseline is the best for rejuvenating that old leather cup. WD40 is mostly just mineral spirits with a small amount of lught machine oil. The mineral spirits will dry it out worse. And... You do not want "friction" to build pressure. Youre looking for the plunger cup to SEAL against the pump tube.
@OliveDrabAlliance

The haversack is great if it is big. The respirator is kept on a plastic inner so it is easy to get on but makes it difficult to pack. Use one as a first aid pack with cadets. I'm into camping Stoves and I've seen something called a "pill bottle stove". Basically it is round pieces of pizza stone that fit in a pill bottle and soak in alcohol. I was trying to see if pumice would work the same way. It doesn't. I did a follow up video (that I have since removed on my own accord) trying a couple other things along with pumice stones. Basically I was trying to use the stone like a wick in that video. I ended up building something that maybe people shouldn't try at home so I took it down. I do have one other thing I want to try with the pumice stone as a wick idea. Maybe today or tomorrow

Nice design from the Brits. I hate Velcro, too. I am not an astronaut. That being said, if you are having to deploy the gas mask, excuse me, chemical weapons mask, noise discipline is the least of your worries. Now if you happen upon a couple of nature lovers out on the trail doing what comes naturally and you want to break out a can of Vienna sausages while enjoying the show, then yeah, the Velcro could hamper your good time.

I obtained a new, unissued bag last year. It serves well as haversack for a day-hike and easily carries a 10x10 ft tarp, paracord, stakes, Sawyer Mini, BCB Firedragon stove, Coffee, GI Issue aviators canteen/flask, SRO Stainless Canteen Flask/Cup, 6" Israeli bandage & 4x4's, ..., Flashlights, folding saw. Currently I'm using it as a dedicated "first aid" kit. It also attaches conveniently to the upper part of the GI "H" harness as an extra location for a buttpack (the 2 D-rings for the shoulder strap). Larger size molle (Brit magazine) side pouches are available in the same camo but very £ ($). I've also been able to attach a "woobie" (poncho liner) in its compression sack) to the top of the flap with paracord. It's a versatile piece of kit.

Just like the old GI Bumbag these fast carry quite a load, but never quite enough. Once full they bump about too much. Backpacks just give more utility and are more comfortable to carry. However, I have quite a few respirator bags, for heavy tools and rope lines, to chuck in the truck or storage bins you find on vehicles or boats. The one shown is particularly robust and pretty useful.
@OliveDrabAlliance
@OliveDrabAlliance 2 дня назад
I can definitely see that being the case. You've got to find valance between the gear you carry and how it carries. You just can't beat a good backpack, but sometimes you've got to be more nimble and some gear you never want to be far from, so finding the right balance is key.
