Dr. Pettit influenced me by his sterling example of excellence that challenged me to hold myself to the highest standards. Yet Bob is also a cordial and warm human being who genuinely cares about people, another example to follow. He always made me feel appreciated. I am greatly encouraged by his work to make the world a better place!

Warmest congratulations to Prof. Bob Pettit on his retirement! I met Bob Pettit when I arrived at ASU in 1981, and I was pleased to be able to play a very small part in his research by introducing a then new mass spectrometry approach (“fast atom bombardment”) that allowed mass spectra to be obtained of his otherwise recalcitrant compounds. Bob was (and is) very much a force of nature: he was intensely driven in his life mission to discover successful anti-cancer drugs that might help alleviate this human scourge. I was impressed by the fact that, in addition to energetically pursuing both federal funding and local charitable donations, Bob even went so far as to organize his own local tennis tournament as a fund raiser! As we have seen from his retirement video, Bob sought novel anti-cancer compounds in marine organisms, and participated in scuba diving expeditions in the South Pacific to seek out exotic life forms. I remember feeling jealous that physical chemists would have trouble justifying such pursuits - although, if we did, our destinations would probably be somewhere far less inviting, maybe the Bering Sea… Very best wishes, Bob!

Austen (again) I have fond memories of the way Bob welcomed me to ASU , back in '89, and the way he would regale me with stories of he and his little boat out in the Indian ocean in his summers, gathering moluscs, often in the shadow of giant Japanese vessels there with the same objective. It is rare to find people of such devotion to their science, and fierce desire to contribute to the health and welfare of their fellow human beings as you have been. We're proud of you, Bob. Sincere thanks for the inspiration.

Bob -- You have had a remarkable career, singularly focused on discovering anti-cancer and anti-infective agents. You are an example of a complete academic entrepreneur by simultaneously achieving success as a scientist, leader, innovator, mentor, politician and fund raiser -- all devoted towards your passion for solving cancer. Congratulations on all of your achievements. You have been an inspiration to us all. -- With best wishes, Bill Petuskey

I want to congratulate Bob on his many years of service, and say how much I have enjoyed him as a colleague for 45 years. Bob and Mort Munk were instrumental in hiring me at ASU and enticing me to come here. I have collaborated with Bob on NMR structural studies of his compounds on several occasions, and I also enjoyed several multi-day backpacking trips with him and others to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (and back). Bob's scientific productivity has been prodigious, and valuable to others in many areas of science and medicine. I wish him the best of luck as he embarks on a new stage of life.

Biology absolutely expanded my mind when learning about the actualized nature of the growing serendipitously functional ever changing proteo-/ribo- me that continues as a foundation in biology, in which no contriving mind could be more creative. It will be interesting to see what we have learned after decades.
