are the helmets just as safe as their european/american counterparts? since they dont have the certifications
@judebikedude6379

Japan have their own safety standard for crash helmets. How that stacks up against DOT / Snell / Sharp, I don't know. But these are Arai and Shoei helmets. They are not going to be unsafe. I'm sure you can buy cheap US/ EU certified helmets that will offer less protection in a crash than a Japanese Arai or Shoei. However, because they do not carry EU or US certification stickers, they may be illegal to use in your region, depending on local laws.

@@lihaoqiu2547 Hey, sorry for the delay. There isn't a drastic difference between the two brands, but there is a difference. I imported 2 Shoei helmets (one I didn't show on my 'head shape' video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bzy19KGt5Dk.html ) and the Arai. The latter is slightly rounder but still very comfortable, but I feel the two Shoei's fit me better and are my favourite helmets. Just bought an arai, and in the shop it felt perfect, absolutely perfect. Even the Shoei pinched the sides of my head (not the temple, the space above/behind the ears). I wore it around for a bit in the house and it still fits ... 99% good, but there was some discomfort or sensation along one of those ridges back there. Ever since I've been trying to figure out if the Japanese helmets could fit better..

The shell is the same, but the EPS liner (the white stuff) is a different shape. I see that Shoei offer a custom fit service in the EU now to accommodate different head shapes, but the fit is adjusted by modifying the comfort liner which fits on top of the EPS liner.

Not sure if he is just telling me this to get the sale or not. I think buying it in Canada might be a better option. However, the price difference is quite a lot. It's $400CAD more for the same helmet if I were to buy it back home. I did try the helmet on and found it not that bad, except the D-Ring was digging into my jawbone a bit. For the cost of these Arai helmets, I want to be certain I get the best possible fit.

If you're UK/ US - before you import anything, try the Shuberth C3 Pro.

Asian living in USA and ride motorcycles. People don't understand how painful American helmets are. The top of my head doesn't touch the helmet because of how round my head is even though I bought the most round helmet available from both Arai and Shoei. Importing a helmet also means it doesn't have the same approvals required in a lot of states in the US. Infuriating!!!
@StringBanger
@StringBanger Год назад
I know this a year late but if you live in a state where it's optional to wear a helmet then you can use a helmet of your choice. The other factor is insurance. If you insure your safety gear and it gives a discount on your insurance if you happen to be in an accident the insurance can potentially deny your claim if the helmet is not DOT approved. Read through the language in the policy.

@judebikedude6379

Hi Cesar - as far as I can tell, the exterior shells are identical and this is true for both Arai and Shoei, so the regional fit differences must be achieved by altering the EPS liner.

Jude, great video and explanation. My head is similar to yours in shape with the exception that mine is flat in the back (typical South American native). I have worn Schuberth, Nolan (best fit so far), AGV and Shoei; all of them gave me horrendous headaches with pressure points directly behind my ears. I had to make modifications to the helmet foam, just to make them bearable. Never really found a comfortable helmet. I am about to reach out to a US retailer that advertises customization of the foam inserts to account for head shape differences. If that doesn't work, I will have to order the Asian fit Arai XD-4 that is currently advertised on EBay. That's a lot of money to pay for shipping but if it solves the hot spots and headaches, it will be well worth it. Thanks again.

Hi - It appears that Arai actually care more about head shape for the US market than they do for the UK market. We don't have a model that's specifically marketed as 'round-oval' like the Quantum X. I could not, for example, categorically tell you that a US Quantum X is more oval than a Japanese RX-7X. Have you tried different lining thicknesses and removed the peel away foam from any 'hot-spots'? This should all be part of the fitting service with Arai. I also found these guys: www.lidpicker.com/ - they claim to match head shape with their comprehensive helmet database. If you've watched my video on helmet / head eccentricity, how do your wife's head dimensions match up with mine?
