I watch this video about 3-4 times per year. I enjoy it every time. The commentators were dismissive of him early, but I don’t think they were overly disrespectful … kawauchis run was absurd vs the weather and the perceived best practices of Boston marathon strategy. They certainly didn’t know who he was, and had to learn about him as the race went on. All fair. It’s a great study on all fronts. Congrats Yuchi
Looks like he also has really good drafting skills for a non team marathon runner, every time he was behind someone he matched them perfectly, and it’s incredibly unlikely this was his angle, but his early leads seemed to get into the other runners head and caused him to go a little to hard. Still amazing the the person who seemed least prepared for the weather was the least affected by it.
They do mention towards the end that he'd run an even colder marathon just 3 months prior but, yeah, nothing can prepare you fully for cold, rain, and hills in Boston. He's a machine.
He opened up with a 4:37 1st mile someone handled him a piano after 5k He made several very fast surges under horrible conditions heavy rain and very windy and still won lol Amazing race... Clearly he was the strongest runner that day and by far.
2:45 "haha funny japanese who want to be on camera." 3:15 : He is too fast, he will stop" 4:17 Laugh again 5:14 Laugh again 6:52 Laugh again 14:14 "wow" 20:39 "unbelievable"
The guy with the lower voice had a sarcastic tone at the beginning of the race as he questioned Yuki running ahead. He also said 'he just wants to be on tv' Later on, as the other guy continuously mentions his records, this lower voiced guy starts shutting up and all he could say was, "he's been on tv half the time", "this guy has been a movie today.......now back to first place (Kirui)". Rooting for the non-Japanese and refusing to accept the fact that Yuki has a good chance to win because he laughed at him earlier in the race. I know it's just speculation, but that's the impression I got from listening to these guys talk 😆
Whenever i force myself through training under harsh weather conditions, i keep repeating to myself: "Be Kawauchi! Be Kawauchi!" And yes, it helps a lot. Yuki simply is the embodiment of fighting spirit.
His name is so damn fitting for this race. I don't know what the direct translation is but if you break up the kanji individually and use a bit of embellishment his name could be something like within the river of snow - Kawauchi Yuki. Or some variation of that.
GO KAWAUCHI GO YOU LITTLE BASTARD. ive never watched a running thing, but when i saw this on a reel i had to chrck this out. I *will* watch the whole thing. This is fkn awe inspiring. Just hard nose, idgaf, iron will, badassery. Every time this man takes the lead i jump up and cheer. All i can say is this.... that must have been a VERY light piano!
