YOU CAN REALLY SAY THIS ROLLER GAMES HAD SOME CLASS TALENT. THE EASTERN WARRIORS WITH JUDY ARNOLD AND JIM TROTTER AGAINST THE NEW YORK BOMBERS WITH JUDY SOWINSKI AND RONNIE RAINES WAS A TREMENDOUS SKATING. WHERE AS CHARLIE OCONNNEL WAS THE KING ON SKATES WITHOUT ANY QUESTION JUDY ARNOLD WAS THE QUEEN ON SKATES OUT DOING ANYTHING JOAN WESTON COULD DO. JUDY AS A WOMAN WAS MAKING AS MUCH MONEY AS CHARLIE OCONNELL WAS 60,000 A YEAR UNHEARD FOR THAT TIME IN THE 7'0'S

Margie Lazlo was by far the worst captain ever, both in the Derby and Roller games, she never backed up her women's team, she skated for the Warriors when Judy Arnold was Captain, and also for the T-Birds when Sally Vega was Captain and Vega was a really bad Captain, Ann Cavella could skate and block better anan Lazlo and Vega. When Joan Weston was Captain of the Bombers someone hurt one her girls Weston went after them. And I felt bad bad for Jan Vallow when they made her co- Captain of the Pioneers with Sheerie Ehrick as the other co_ Captain, Erick was so damn weak She never blocked only Vallow, I once saw Diane syverson beat the hell out of Erick and Vallow went after her and Cavello

That was amazing. It had to have been hard at times. Imagine, it sounds like the players had to provide their own transportation! ... 250 days a year... You certainly would know, Mark. It surely looks different when we see what the players experience, as if we were on the track. There seemed to be some, extra, personal??? or professional ??? competition between Joan W. and Delores T. Maybe this is normal. This was very interesting. I saw some glimpses of your Mom. Thank-you, Mark...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Don't we all? However, I'm afraid those days are long gone. Have you seen these "divas" who claim they are part of the "Roller Derby"? They are only concerned about their clever monikers, and they don't even skate on a banked track! Ridiculous scores (in the 200s); there is absolutely no defense and it is female skaters only. The women of the old Roller Derby would have torn through them like salts through a goose!

It is great to finally see this segment. Back around 1970 or so, I saw Larry Smith and Francine Cochu on WML The panel narrowed the category to roller skating but didn't guess Roller Derby. Jack Cassidy was one of the celebrity panelists. I think Soupy Sales may have been another one, and the host was Wally Bruner. Strangely enough, the film clip they showed of Francine showed her in action against the Southern Mustangs. That was odd because the Mustangs only skated about two or three weeks. I also saw Joan Weston on To Tell the Truth. A couple of the panelists guessed her. One of them (may have been Peggy Cass) picked the real Joanie "because she had the softest voice." I have heard that Joan Weston and Jan Vallow appeared together on an episode of Truth or Consequences, but I've never met anyone who saw that program.

Even if you didn't like Alphonso's skating tactics, he always made the game interesting! He complemented James Paul well on the IRSL's Eastern Express although it was a bit surreal seeing them as teammates after the way they had battled one another when on opposite teams. But then again, that was no more surreal than seeing Joanie Weston and Ann Calvello become teammates on the ISC Bombers in 1974!

Love this rare clip of these two Roller Derby teams in action against each other. I still remember watching the NE Braves knock off the SF Bay Bombers in that 1969 championship game! I remember being amazed that the Bombers lost! Guess I shouldn't have been though as that was a talented and powerful Braves team with Ronnie Robinson and Cathie Read leading it. What a shame that all those wonderful games weren't preserved for posterity. They'd be a goldmine today! A big Charlie Brown sigh. Wait, make that a big Charlie O'Connell sigh!
