Here's my personal thought: Chong Qing is a newly developed metropolis located in southwestern China, if you happen to live in first tier cities on the east coast such as Beijing or Shanghai, people around you are way more used to foreigners and you probably would never get stared at. When it comes to WeChat, it's just a different system, it would not be so much of an issue when you get used to it.

If you haven't found out, most of the people in Chongqing speaks Chinese with a heavy Southwest Chongqing accent, which is different than standard Mandarin 普通话. If in the future your kid needs to learn, they will probably teach him Mandarin first, then the local 重庆话.
Regarding the first two, it would be worse in the suburbs. I am a Chinese, but they drive me mad. It’s not so-called culture. Those Chinese simply don’t have a sense of personal hygiene. Luckily, most of the young generations don’t do. Totally agree with you that GFW is annoying. Troublesome to use vpn.
