I switched from the AcePro to the DJI Action. Not worried about low light as I have the pocket 3. I have never been worried about breaking the gimbal. The pocket is not an action camera. The action is good enough for me and MUCH lighter than the AcePro.
10bit 8bit. first of all are you watching it on a monitor that is capable of displaying 10bit.? They say the average person can distinguish between around 1 million colours. (thats about 7 bits per channel). So you have to ask yourself is 10 bit just all sale hype?. It it like having a car that can do 200mph but has a speed restrictor fitted so it can only do 50 mph? Same as this whole 8k 4k resolution. The vast majority of internet users are running a "2k" screen resolution. So post a video to the net in 8k means nothing to the majority of internet users. We really have got so caught up in the sales hype used by camera companies, we just dont realise it.
Love your intelligent, video-knowledgeable commentary while not trying to sell me on one camera or the other. I do happen to be a DJI user with the Action 2, Action 4, and, as of yesterday, the Action 5. The Action 5 is not an "Upgrade choice" but an "Add-to choice" and will be my interview camera for the dual DJI Mic 2 feature. Anyway, your keen comments of interest in this video while you walk/run the streets, point out the lighting variances, the trees, and the slo-mo is so engaging. I did hold my breath during your jump, way to go, please don't do that anymore, your vids are better if you are not laid up in a cast. Thank you for this video!
@@PhillipSkraba jakosc nie 4k. Taka na krotkie rolki lub donowe z wycieczek. Coekawe i przydatne tryby auto. Bateria tylko 10min. Ale za to maly i podrecznyy. Fajnie sie nim lata. Wstaw od siebie jek cos nagrasz. Pozdrawiam.
Unfortunately, the bitrate issue only will shop up in fast action shoots, especially with grass, still videos you won't notice any difference with lower bitrate
Yes, that's correct, this was more about seeing how quickly these break up in grading, but I'll probably do another video with just trees and a sky with a gradient.
It's all relative but in reality, people love the clickbait of pointing out flaws but at end of the day, as you said, if you lined them up side by side, it's not about which is better but which YOU like the look of better.
G9-14 or G9-5, which is better, I’m sure that’s a hard question to answer. I guess I should say what are the main differences & which one is the latest model?
I love that you make videos like this one! Personally, I noticed better sunsets colors and less banding when I bumped from 8 bit to 10 bit as a result of moving from GoPro hero 9 to 11. Although, that is moving through a same brand camera systems. I did also notice less artifacts when moving faster - and I go through a lot of forests. This video proves that there are so many other factors at play, with ai computational processing to boot, that bit rate is only one factor of many. I will say, I am loving GoPro's ability to film in 5k and then crop in edit. Not sure where to upgrade next? Can't wait to see what the ace pro 2 will bring to the table. Actually, next purchase will probably be the insta360 x4. It looks like a lot of fun. I should also thank you for getting me started on my lil action mini camera filming road. I would say your videos are what inspired me to buy a GoPro and get out there filming (sadly, not as much as I'd like because day jobs and time)! Keep it up!
Yes, so many factors in play here, it's not just bitrate against bitrate, and besides bitrate is something DJI can increase for us, I'm sure of it. The Insta360 X4 is by far the most fun and exciting camera on the market, I love that thing! As for the Ace Pro 2, it's coming and it's coming in hot, I can't say anything more than that! Well, that is great to hear, thank You! It's good you're doing what you love, and I think RU-vid is a great place to be, you never know, a year on and you might grow so big you'll quit your day job! Mind you, last video 6 months ago, come on, make something new!!
I think because in forest color balance of white & tint is sometimes bad. Also in green location even skin tone is not good. As a professional photographer I say - in green forest everything want to be green)
10:30 a perfect proof that the action5 has better dynamic range. Sky highlights are better dealt with and also shadows on cars are lifted slightly more although it seems like ace pro has more contrast
Yes, the sky in that shot is totally blue, which is freaky to me, and I don't think I like it, in fact I'd really like DJI to add the option to turn off hdr so that shot doesn't look so freaky. You can't compare, but the Arri Alexa has 17 stops of dynamic range and it just looks more natural. On the other hand the burnt out sky of the Ace Pro bothers me the more I look at it. I guess pleasing us isn't easy lol.
great video! two great cameras, the DJI arrived at a very good price, and the autonomy it has is incomparable, I have to buy one, I will wait for the ace pro 2, but it is worth twice as much as the DJI and only improves a little, it doesn't work for me .. I hope it comes at a competitive price like the DJI.
The vast majority of peop.e who watch youtube videos arent going to sit there and scrutinize color grading, bit rates, etc, etc. Where are at the point with these cameras where it dont matter which one you have cause theycall get the job done, which is capture the moment. People that go about and say this camera is better cause it has x amount bitrate and the other one has y amount. No one watches a video and goes "well your video would have been better if you used a gopro instead of a dji and vice versa. If the content sucks the camera doesnt matter. A lot of the time people just want some little thing to justify their purchase over something else and at this point with these cameras it dont really matter. No one is using an action camera to make cinema movies. Vast majority use them for personal videos and posting to the internet.
Exactly right. However they do use GoPros in a lot of feature films due to the nature and size of the camera. At the end of the day though, yep, they’re all pretty much identical when it comes to the image.
@@PhillipSkraba right and no one watching the movie is going to say "oh they used a gopro in that scene, they should have used an ace pro or dji" and vice versa. Thats the whole point a lot of us are trying to make is that this day in time people are just nit-picking when it doesnt really matter the things they nit pick. Better things to compare are features like how the dji can effortlessly use the dji wireless mics without adapters / receivers. How the gopro has different lenses you can put on etc because image quality these days are all pretty much the same
Yes, but you can see the differences. Compare it with a Hero13. Insta360 and Dji are almost on the same level. But the Hero13 is a completely different story.
In good light, the Hero 13 is very, very comparable, and probably the sharpest due to its smaller sensor. All three are excellent cameras that excel at different points, it's important to remember that.
A lot of quality is determined by the light available. I still have an old Sony Handycam CX405 and given good light it takes great video good enough for RU-vid. As soon as the light fades or you are indoors then the quality is dreadful.
With good lighting you can film with a calculator and it'll look good, that's true. If things get dark, a lot of these cameras will fall apart quickly.
I really do get the feeling that some people seems to have forgotten when the point of action cameras is... To mainly go out, shoot and have fun while doing it... The average youtube viewer will not be asking about 8bit, 10bit, d-log etc... they are interested in the content you put out and in the story you are trying to tell. But there is always that "expert" that feels all those technical bits will help them tell their story. Sorry to burst your bubble. If your is crap, no amount of log editing or bitrate will keep the user engaged!
I don't really care at all if I'm using 8-bit or 10-bit on my action cameras, I care about what I'm capturing. Yes, it's important to remember what a lot of people have seemed to have forgotten, content is 1st, audio 2nd, image 3rd. Without the 1st and 2nd, no one will care about the 3rd.
Cmon, there is a sharpness setting (called texture). If you think the default is too sharp, pull it down. DJI doesn't have to do any thing, you do. Useful comparison otherwise.
@@PhillipSkraba I own the Action 3 as well as the Pocket 3. Now I am thinking about buying the Action 5. There is only one thing that really holds me back right now. And that's not the bitrate nor the sharpness. Since I live in Europe, I am just waiting for someone saying something about the "European overheating issue" which we have with the AO3 as well as with the AO4 (Europe only!). Strange but true, since the first update we don't have this issue on the Pocket 3 anymore. But on the AO3 and AO4 we still have to use a "patch" in order to have them going for longer time. I hope the AO5 will not have the same limitations... and maybe the lower bitrate will help too. So... waiting for news about this. 😀
@@TheBestShowman I think it'll have the same problem, as DJI seems to be the only company to have an CE and FCC mode on its action cameras. GoPro and Insta360 have worldwide overheating max temps, DJI have a lower one for Europe as you've mentioned. We'll see, I'm sure there will be lots of tests coming.
@@PhillipSkraba If that's the case I will have to wait until someone finds out if the "patch" works on the AO5 as well. It should, since DJI has no interest in blocking this little "backdoor trick". If they would care, they certainly would have blocked this possibility in one of their firmware updates. But they never did... So... I cross my fingers 🙂
Wait for the firmware updates, and it's an action cam they are amazing for what they are thanks for your testing, but personally, I only need it to look good, and I am happy 👍
I have full respect for you my friend, but this is not a proper bitrate test. The bitrate shows best at busy scenes especially with low-light where you can see smudges and smearing of textures and compression artefact. In this well lit scene with not a lot of small details and patterns, I expect the images from both cameras to be good. If you make the forest comparison you did 2 days ago but between these 2 cameras, you will be very shocked of the results and the bitrate difference (hint, I already did)
Yes, I fully agree that's much better on testing the bitrate, and having had them both in the forest, I agree, you can see a little bit of a difference, but only a little bit. That's my point in this video, even if you grade them, and really push that grade, be it 8-bit or 10-bit, be it 100mbps or 170mbps, you won't really notice much of a difference. These cameras have got so good that you're left choosing between their specific features. When DJI give us an update, I'm pretty sure with a higher bitrate the Action 5 will be level with the rest. Then comes the Ace Pro 2, and we start all over again lol.
How about HLG? That comes with the rec 2100 color space, and HLG HDR can be uploaded to RU-vid with that HDR badge. Action 4 to my knowledge only operates in rec 709
@@PhillipSkraba Thank you! I've been working in rec2100 for some time now so I was really disappointed to find out that oa4 only works in rec709. Couldn't stomach the switch back to it so I sold the oa4. OA5 fixed that shortcoming though and I'm already using it for both of my channels, pretty happy with the ultrawide 11mm equivalent, and the 120fps - although it would have been awesome to have ultrawide and 120fps at the same time. I'm curious if there would be a visible improvements for the color palette test in HLG and dlog-m (I think the latter is also rec709?) but I imagine any benefits would be lost if the upload to RU-vid is non-HDR.
Yes, D-log m is in rec709, and yes, any benefits would be lost when you upload. I used hlg for a while, but went back to the 709 space. Generally a great little camera, really like it.
Thank you for this!!! Re: Sharpness, I’m pretty sure you can turn it down on the action 5. I turn down sharpness on all action cams. Action 5 is too sharp out of box for sure!
@@PhillipSkraba hope they fix the over sharpening in a firmware update. I wonder when they’ll drop that and what it will address. I feel like they need to do it soon. Usually DJI is pretty good about that.
@@PhillipSkraba Right , you pick one for whatever reason , let’s say … the way sky looks or for underwater filming, but then you run into a low light situation and you have to pick another one. Then one day you might need longer battery … or something else. I guess I’ll keep my Action 5.
@@Marian1st. i say pick the one that does what YOU need it to do not what someone else tells you. For me the DJI would be the pick because of things like easy syncing with the wireless mic. They all produce about the same quality image for 95% of the people buying so it just comes down to the extras. For me the DJI startup time, wireless mic sync, etc win over for example a gopro where they try to sell you more on the accessories like different lenses, mod kits, etc. Its an action camera, i want to pull it out and hit record and start recording, not thinknabout which lense to put on etc.
@@JoshThompson25 I feel the same. That’s why I went with Action 4 and now Action 5. GoPro would not be my choice. When I was looking to get an action camera, Action 4 won pretty fast. Then I went with 5 because I liked 4 and now 5 is even better. Outside the action cameras, I also considered Osmo Pocket 3. Nice camera, but you gotta be more careful how you handle it. So for that reason, an action camera is better for me.
@@PhillipSkraba Haha I think it was great! I could have watched like 4 hours of it. I like to get into the technical details of cameras. Will check your other videos , maybe I’ll find some good settings to use with my Action 5. I’m not happy with this camera when it comes to the way it displays the sky. The clouds are washed out … like no details at all, but yet it over sharpens everything else.
I'd wait till the first update from DJI, I think that will change a lot. Hopefully they'll give us the option to turn that damn hdr off so the sky will look more natural.
@@PhillipSkraba Yeah. Can’t wait for that. You make great videos. I watched a bunch and only today I saw that I didn’t subscribe. So now we’re all set. Haha
I think the audience is just nitpicking at this point. If you look at how much tech they’ve crammed into this tiny device, it’s impressive. Last year, people were complaining about low light, and they improved on that. This year, it’s the bit rate. Do people really pay that much attention when watching an action scene? Personally, I’ve never watched an action sequence and thought, ‘Oh, that tree is a bit blurry’ or ‘That sand is grainy.’ 🤦🏻♂️
Yes, exactly. That's what people are doing. They want these little things to be Reds or Arris, that's just not what they are. They're action cameras, and they're not iPhones either. These are the best of the best of what they do.
@@AnonyMous40810 There’s a lot of great things about this cam no doubt, and certain people will have different opinions, but that doesn’t solve the halo this camera produces around certain objects in 10 bit colour mode, it’s there and there’s no reason DJI can’t improv on it, as this over sharpened look doesn’t appear in other colour modes like HLG or D-Log M.
A month ago when the first leaks showed up online with very little specs, trolls/GoPro fanboys were crapping on this camera and announcing from the rooftops they were not going to buy it. They didn't even wait for real information before throwing mud at it.
I understand fanboys. A professional cinematographer will take a camera and a lens set and will test it out before starting production, and if Bob down the road feels like he has to do that in order to invest $400 in a new action camera, which might be a lot of money for him, then that's totally understandable. However, these three cameras, the Hero 13, Action 5 Pro and Insta360 are excellent and it's hard to go wrong with any one of them.
Thank you for making this brother. People are bored. I have never seen someone say how amazing footage looks.. but then look at the spec sheet and start saying how horrible the footage is 😂🥲🥲. And a lot of these people are acting like we’re shooting stuff that’s going to be in a movie theater… even if there was any but rate issue (which there’s not), we’re not even going to notice it on our TVs, Laptops, and especially phones.
Totally right! Now funny you say that as I did actually use my Hero 3, back in 2012 on a feature film here in Poland, one that aired in movie theatres, and no one cared about the bitrate, the fact that it didn't have log, they were just happy they had this tiny little tool they could mount in places the Arri couldn't be mounted. These are tools, and in 2024 they have crammed so much crazy ass tech in them that people should be very happy with what we've been offered by DJI, GoPro and Insta360. Right now, only a persons imagination is stopping him creating.
Insta Ace Pro is already the clear winner. In Ocober the AcePro2 is in the market which will beat the other action cams another time !!!!! Cant wait to get it
Thanks! It's so true, any of these cameras will make great video and when not put side by side with competitors and pixel peeping no one would know the difference or bat an eye. Ultimately when you capture action, travel, or vlogging content it isn't the image quality its the CONTENT that matters.
I figured out how to fix the 10 bit colour mode look, before exporting to my phone, I make sure my contrast and shadows are adjusted, this also fixes the pastel colours to a richer look similar to the action 4.
@@PhillipSkraba I agree, in 10 bit colour mode it’s too harsh, you notice it in the tops of trees and foliage. And if you freeze the frame, you can zoom in and see the pixel distortion around the edges, I think I’ll stick to filming in the city for now lol
@@independentmind6345you are make the point that alot of us are trying to make about these cameras tthese days. Any of the top 3 will do the job and do it well especially for youtube and personal video memories. You have to freeze the frame and zoom in to find some kind of "issue". People watching youtube content and what not are doing this because they dont care. We dont watch youtube to freeze the video and zoom in to try and find issues with the shot. 99% of content consumers watch for the content not to go over the production with a fine tooth comb. The only reason people see the differences between the images these cameras produce is when someone makes a youtube video using them all and putting it side by side. When its just 1 cameras footage no one really cares because they all produce good enough quality
They both have strong points. The Action 5 Pro clearly has better focusing on you at vlogging distance, the Ace Pro remains soft... its biggest weak point has been close focus. I like the normal colors of the Ace Pro a bit better, but of course Action 5 Pro has a great D-LOG M profile just for color grading, something the 8-bit only flat profile in the Ace Pro doesn't. The Action 5 Pro is creating too much of an HDR look in the standard color profile and sometimes gives a smooth color to a face or wall when the Ace Pro shows more natural detail, but again that doesn't apply to D-LOG M. It will be interesting to see what Ace Pro 2 brings but right now the way I see it is: GoPro, the weakest technically but if you really want the niche add-on lens system or just love their colors in bright, bright sun... sure buy it. DJI / Insta360 both have excellent cameras with different weak points so its up to you want you want... there is no "one" camera that wins at everything (unless Ace Pro 2 somehow does, I doubt it).
That's right. They are all good, and they all have their pros and cons. The Ace Pro 2 will surely be exciting. There is no camera that does it all perfectly though, it's either too small, too big, no 10-bit, not flat enough log, small screen, big screen, low bitrate, too small a sensor, too big a sensor, too little focus, and on and on and on. Right now it's about choosing the right tool for the job, and we have three competitors that all have something incredible to offer.
I was surprised to see how blurry the Ace Pro looked compared to the Action 4 and 5. I'd heard the complaints but hadn't seen it as evident as it is in this video.
First, like your videos and been watching all the ace pro and action 5 stuff, its all good real world tests. Just wanted to add here that you wont learn much about low bit rate limitations when comparing videos where nothing is moving. You could probably not notice a difference between a 5mbps file and a 100mbps file if nothing has moved for a good deal of time. The reason action cameras and high bit rate makes sense is because they are usually strapped to fast moving things like mountain bikes or cars where every pixel of the image is changing every frame which means fitting all that motion data into a lower bit rate is impossible without artefacts where the compression has to average out pixels into blocks to fit
Totally right, they make sense and you see stuff really falling apart on an fpv drone or on a bike in the forest. For a 5mbps image we’d see pixels, a total lack of definition, but here I wanted to more convey the idea that grading them to an extreme will produce similar visual effects to a certain extreme. Either way we’re at a point right now where things are looking equally good.
No doubt you will already know this, but some of your visitors might not. 10bit vs 8bit is significantly better when using cameras like this in bright blue skies, or cloudy, or overcast, or foggy scenes. I can personally attest to this after filming in foggy conditions with an 8bit output which would quickly lead to banding with some light grading in Davinci Resolve, whereas 10bit footage in the same situation could be pushed significantly harder. Those additional "greys" being collected add so much space to be able to play with the colours later. In your nice controlled office desk setting here it's good proof that the underlying performance of the cameras is basically the same, but when used in real conditions (and certainly with drones) the reality is that a camera like the Action 5 Pro is going to smash everything else out of the sky.
Yeah, it's usually best on skies where there is a gradient, but to be honest I rarely encounter that problem even with 8-bit, I do my best not to push footage that far, and if I do see banding, I usually know I've pushed any grade way beyond the realms of looking natural.
Yeah the higher the frame rate on the Action 5, the higher the bitrate. I finally flew FPV with it this morning in 50fps in D-log M and to fair, it looks awesome and I’ve only ran it through gyroflow so far, not colour graded yet. It will be great if they send an update with a higher bitrate option for fast moving stuff, sure, but right now I’m still impressed. Also yeah, I noticed VS the Avata 2 camera, I actually needed to use the ND32 in quite bright conditions. Don’t think I needed to go that high so far with the Avata2. 16 has done the job. Definitely seems like it exposes a touch brighter. It’s all good 👍
@@PhillipSkraba Agreed! I’m so impressed with it so far. It was on a mount on the Avata 2 as I need to get a freestyle drone for it.. and even though the A2 was struggling a bit cos of extra weight (and wind gusts), it looks stable as a MF after gyroflow.
