A channel where I'll be discussing past and present magazines. Currently editor for Pixel Addict magazine and writer for Amiga Addict mag. My love for magazines has led me to collecting many classic titles, interviewing many games writers for Maximum Power Up podcast and more. At times there will be some general gaming chat but the channel will most focus on magazines.
Ah Dino Dini, a legend in his his own head. When he released the appalling PS4 version of Kick Off 2 which used only 1 button because why make it more playable to everyone? Wow did he not like any criticism. Didn't take kindly to Paul Rose (Mr Biffo) daring to not like the game.
I bought issue 1 with my pocket money from the newsagents in the local indoor market. I've been trying for years to remember the name of the mag and thought I'd dreamed it - I kept on and on at people (particularly Dudley of Yesterzine) about this mythical tabloid format games mag and how I'd seen the kids behind it on The Big Breakfast. I think people thought I was losing the plot so thanks for finally confirming it was all real!
@@PaulTalksGamesMags I'm a long time listener of your Maximum Power thingy podcast so this is the natural sub option 🙂 Oh plus the only other regular mag reviewer is that dodgy Atari loving... fantasist (the most polite description I can think of).
There’s something fascinating about the death throes of a gaming magazine! From their initial heyday to a husk of their former glory (looking at you, Crash!) Based on this vid, not sure if Game Zone was ever ‘all that’ and don’t remember picking it up myself. I was more of a Super Play/Total reader.
Great video and beautiful magazines. I am looking for some issues of mean machines magazine playstation. If you have a double to sell, please let me know. Thank you :)
The Rare companion booklet, like several others they've done, is extremely lightweight on writing substance - I don't know why they bother. It scarcely justifies the extra packaging involved either. Nonetheless, this actually is a genuinely brilliant issue, one of the best in a long time. For all its faults, RG is the only mag I still irregularly pick up, and it's a fantastic achievement to have kept going for so long. Helps they have their worldwide distribution in order, I suppose. I enjoyed the ST Action magazine chat too, thanks for another good video!
I don't get RG every issue anymore but this one I had to get. The booklet's can be ok- I liked the Resi Evil one. I'll delve into some Mean Machines or Super Play next week.
For about ten or twelve years this was *the* gold standard gaming magazine. In terms of design, journalism, and knowledgeable writing it was untouchable. If you wanted the definitive word on a new game (give or take a few mistakes here and there), you went for the Edge review. I'd say it took a year or so to really find its feet, but this has to be the high watermark of UK print gaming magazines even now. Jason Brookes sadly missed.
Yeah great to see as not many mags left. PC Gamer hits 30 soon and Retro Gamer 20. Then there is only Play, PC Pro, Linux Format and then Amiga Addict and Pixel Addict sold in the shops. May be one other I am forgetting.
Interesting to learn this was the genesis of PlayStation Plus, a mag which I do have a big soft spot for. Oh for the days when publishing houses could afford to be experimental to see what worked and what didn't, and then just try again. Great video as usual :)
PlayStation Plus had already started around the same time this launched but obviously had more sway to take on MMP. Thanks again for watching. Will get Edge up next week.
A few of the publishers at this time made a big hoo-ha over Bram Stoker's Dracula, which was somewhat suspect given how poor the game was. I'd not seen this mag beyond the covers before but it's quite colourful, I enjoyed the video!
Ah thank you! I know I waffle on a bit but where possible I like to add an info I have been told by people who work on the mags or my own memories from back then.
I enjoyed this, hope you do more of them 🙂. Future Publishing were on top of their game at this point as the page highlighting the other format mags shows.
Thank you! As said this is a small return to YT. Will never be anything fancy, working on the mags takes most of my time. But you will get some thoughts and opinions on some great mags.
