Nice job. For those difficult to reach rust spots, try wrapping a ball of aluminum foil on the skewer end. At minimum it should remove the rust stain from damaged area.
does it make any difference if, when going back through the hole, instead of in front of the thread you go behind it? I've been pulling the thread towards me which leaves room to put the needle behind, and then I do the loop-the-thread-around-the-needle technique too.
No it doesn’t matter Dave I do both as sometimes but never on the same project , forwards or backwards can change the look of the stitch so consistency is the most important thing of all to achieve neat stitching that all look the same

There should be a follow up TV program for anyone who has experienced reincarnation and who are publishing a book or are trying to cash in on the experience, the person and their parents and the people who are witness's should do a lie detector test to prove they are telling the truth and maybe test others with similar reincarnation claims just so we know its not fake, although its not 100% accurate it would support their claim and help sell more books. It would be interesting to see the results I think this would make great TV. Come on someone make the TV program and then they will have lots of guest appearances on TV to support the book deal
