I hope you don't get the wrong message here. There really isn't the right answer to the best school --- I believe that's why people are so paranoid about failing to find it. Singapore education is an excellent form of education. Be confident in your decision and I'm sure you'll make the best out of it :)

Singapore's education system produces students/pupils who are brilliant in Maths, Science, Physics, Accounts etc. However, in the area of language proficiency, generally the youngsters here speak and write very good English, however the same cannot be said of their mother tongue, eg, Chinese. Their language proficiency is so lop-sided, I often hear young people speak very good English, whereas in Chinese they seem to struggle a lot! Maybe our education minister can do something to help our students improve in their mother tongue proficiency, from the primary level to the Polytechnic level.

I'm taking PSLE soon, so I am under A LOT of stress. My teacher got me to watch this as oral is my worst component and really drags down my English grades. And oh my god, this girl's English is fire for someone who learnt English as a second language.

Strangely, many gov sent Sg students to UK graduated from Oxford PPE Philosophy, Politics and Economics, 哲学,政治,经济。Unlike early years, many were from either Cambridge or LSE. The very odd one is today our new PM Lawrence Wong, he went University of Wisconsin-Madison. 🤭

Thank you. This was a really good video. My children are foreign but in the Japanese school system. I like the Japanese public school system for elementary school. But I have no intention of letting them continue into a Japanese JHS/HS. So was considering my options for the future years down the road. Your video gave some interesting insight into the Singaporean public school system which is one of the options I am considering if i can get into Singapore.
@cocolelele
@cocolelele 25 дней назад
So glad my video was helpful! Yes, I've never attended Japanese schools before --- only kindergarten, if that even counts. However, I think my impression of Japanese schools is that it's quite similar to Singapore government schools but lacking in English teaching, which could be a con especially when it comes to the range in career or life options you could have in the future. Hope this helps as well! But take my opinion with a grain of salt!

@@cocolelele Thanks for your response. Since the time of my post, Ive heard from friends in Singapore that getting a work visa for Singapore has become even more difficult. Furthermore something else has come to light in the last few months: the Singapore public education system is extremely expensive for foreigners who are not permanent residents. In fact its almost the same price as an international school. That was surprising. still considering it as an option if there is an opportunity through my company to work in Singapore. Thanks again for your commentary. Its was very insightful.

@@cha1868 Yes! You are spot on. Singapore public education system is extremely expensive for foreigners who are not permanent residents. Which is why I am so lucky to have a permanent residency in Singapore. I am also very lucky to have had such foresighted parents who made the "risky" decision of enrolling me into the Singapore public education system at a time when it wasn't very popular.

My son passed the Asean scholarsip but decided for liberal UK society and IB Diploma at competitive grammar school. There are many excellent private school like hundred years old Sevenoaks School etc. For university, why not choose Drama or Arts School or straight into journalism would probably fits you and perhaps tv presenter later. Watch the hour long Channel 4 News and BBC documentaries, mostly by Asian presenters. The media doesnt represent the government or right wing narrative like the US. Panels from both pro and anti government were then interrogated live. Hence, the government find excuse to absent from tv news. I watch your NHK Japan news and documentary before I visit there one day. Dull like Asian tv. I visited US and not safe and hectic like London. A secret, I blended with the natives, lives in the countryside and safe town and schools. Good luck

Nooo, why did you choose to leave SOTA? They don't just accept anybody. You have to be good at something artistic to get in. May I ask, how you got in? Based on what? Thanks.
@cocolelele
@cocolelele 25 дней назад
I chose theater as my art form at SOTA. Hence, I did not need much in my portfolio like some of my friends in dance, visual arts or music did. As for your question of how I got in, I genuinely do not have a clue. All of my friends at SOTA have very different personalities, passions, backgrounds, etc. Our PSLE scores were quite different too. Hence, I have no idea how I got in. However, if this helps at all, one thing I have really focused on in school applications I have done in the past (both for SOTA and for the school I transferred to) is really delving into who I currently am as an individual. I took a moment --- or even a few days --- to really pause and reflect on who I was as a person. Remember: as much as part of your application is in regard to knowing what you look forward to at the school, the other part of your application is in regard to knowing what the school can look forward to from you! Through your application, you want the school to want YOU! That's the best tip of advice I can give. But also remember that even if you get rejected, that does not entirely mean bad news. Maybe the school wasn't meant for you, after all! Thank goodness you didn't have to spend the next few years at a school not meant for you!

18:12 as a 40 year old singaporean who has been fading all mainstream practices since I as young, and always seen as the black sheep, i can't stress enough about the trap of "finding more about yourself", a narrative that has been pushed to the extreme by western mainstream media and the society now. I can only say, tread along lightly on this topic. I really enjoyed watching your video and learning about your views. Thanks Coco.

Hey, singapore doesn't have red and white stripes... it's the rising sun flag that has that haha 😅 When I was a lot younger and very immature I did want to throw all japanese out of the country after watching documentaries that were probably not made by a singaporean, but stopped wanting to after learning history in school. I'm a little sad that you're thankful for "forgivness" when you should not even have to be forgiven as you didn't even do anything wrong. I was really happy to see singaporean soldiers waving the singaporean flag while they marched right beside japanese soldiers waving the rising sun flag at the french national day parade a few years ago. I don't think any other country that was occupied by japan would have agreed to do that, and i was happy that singapore was mature enough to do it. Therefore i feel sad for how you feel that you should be forgiven for something you didn't do in singapore. I have ancestors who were killed by the japanese, but after living in Europe I have learnt to appreciate Japanese imperial history and I am thankful for it in many ways. When people look at the previous era of history, Japan was really the only non-white global power, and they showed the world that east asians are capable of being a country no less than whites can. and while they may be less capable at some things, they can make up for it through hard work and determination. The fall of singapore was the worst defeat in the history of the british empire, and the fact that half of our defenders were white made it worse. Hitler considered many races as inferior but he never said that about east asians because of Japan. I feel that it's because of Japan that people around the world don't think of east asians as less capable than whites. I hope that one day you won't feel like you have to be forgiven and learn to ignore those who feel like you do, regardless of their nationality.

@lunazero433
@lunazero433 9 месяцев назад
@@cocaineminor4420I hope that won't change. USA thinks everything they do is some sort of righteous cause and they pressure everyone into siding with them by coercing anyone who works with their enemies to stop. While singapore wants to be neutral in global power struggles, the latest statistics show that Singaporeans favour china more than they favour USA. There is a possibility that singapore may end up having to side with china against USA and it's allies in the east which include Japan.

I officially finish sec 3. I kinda regret taking physics. The maths and fomula involved is crazy😭. I always have to stay back with my very helpful teachers. I also almost cut my hand doing d and t and almost fail. My mum once ask why i always come home later than her from work😭 and the school always favour the express stream over the others. The mainstream media always shows the good and successful sides of o levels, soemthign i am working for . This really kinda stress us students even more, my family is too poor to afford international or private schools. Yet alone to help me get into schools like sota. Music is my interest a lot. (Fujii kaze,Katy Perry and Coldplay are my favourite)😊 But dreams don't always come true 😢. I am on the f-a-s scheme and my family lived in an old 3 room hdb flat in toa payoh. Where all the school are f*icking hard to get into. I barely made it into the express stream. 😭 My chinese is horrible 😭 and unlike my classmate i have no tuition as we are short on money, thus my teacher choose to step in and help me.😭 . I am also part of the media productions and have to come to school early in the morning for morning assembly and to set up for school events while my friends can sit in the hall and relax😢 I also have the dream to travel the world 🌍 but i am probably too broke and too young right for it. When the times come, I will probably migrate to Taiwan(hopefully still there) or the USA in the future😊

There was a Chinese Book written by one of our Ambassador Lee Khoon Choy, early years LKY batch politician originated from Penang. His last post was to Japan. His very first posting was Egypt after SG went independent. His foreign affairs also covered Yugoslavia 70s. He met Josip Broz Tito, Former President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Then after, many mishaps and all hells broke loose on that poor woven Federation. Now, we got to see six to seven newly born countries, just like the old Soviet Union. His most successful MFA mission and achievement was establishing link between Sg LKY and Indonesia President Suharto, which had has given us, a city state needed breathing space and stability.
