This is a perfect illustration of what I mean when I tell skiers out west that tree skiing in the east is tight.
@cvn6555
@cvn6555 19 дней назад
Not too sure why that would be three diamonds. Not convinced we need a rating above two. If you can ski a double you only need to know if there are cliffs ahead. Don't need extra ratings so you can tell your friends later on. Trails like this would be single or doubles at big Western resorts like Breck or Jackson.

@ThatPinkSuitGuy
@ThatPinkSuitGuy 20 дней назад
@@antinumchrum9440 yes it is on Nancy Hanks peak, but the “trail” Church (what I ski here) is not the same thing. I say “trail” because it is a backcountry route, and Church is the community name for it. I don’t know why it’s called that, but I’ve heard it’s because you “gotta pray to make it down alive”!

growing up skiing in NY/NE from 4-y/o in the 80s and 90s, I was SHOCKED to come back to YT 25-30 years later and realize that nobody even uses safety bars out west in 2024 (ironically where the peaks are much higher and more precipitous!). edit: for all that powder, it sure sounds like you're scraping a lot of ice.

@easternyellowjacket276 2 месяца назад
This looks like it would be a fun trail if it had coverage. But I suppose that is a chronic problem in the east. Maybe right after a 2 ft. storm it would be good, though 2 ft. storms are incredibly rare in the east.

is a double black EX just a triple black essentially?
@ThatPinkSuitGuy
@ThatPinkSuitGuy 4 месяца назад
Essentially. It's more like a regulated rating. Colorado law says any trail meeting a certain steepness and difficulty requirement NEEDS to be represented with DB EX. Here's what the law says: "A new category, "extreme terrain," will be designated with a double black diamond containing the letters "EX." Terrain that drops steeply, such as a cliff, will no longer be marked with a "danger" sign and instead will be marked with the new sign including the "EX" designation. Extreme terrain is defined in the bill as any place within a ski area boundary with a cliff that drops more than 20 feet along a 15-foot run and a slope with a minimum 50-degree average pitch." I'm assuming it was changed in some way but that's the general difficulty of a DB EX trail.
@Bram4Real
@Bram4Real 4 месяца назад
Some Colorado resorts have both a regular double diamond and EX double diamond rating, some just have EX. Just depends if they want their standard for double diamond to be below or equal to the state's requirement. A-Basin only has the EX one.

I used to patrol at th Bush , and I was SO glad for each day that went by where people did NOT go n get lost in th outback. Even several of my patrol friends, who insisted on trying out these ledges, were really not skiing it in a manner that spelled "having fun" : When your so_called fabulous run involves stopping, traversing excessively and hockey_checking between every other tree, it aint convincing anyone of its merits. A run that actually permits relaxed turns, in continuum, is normally both safer AND more rewarding.

For everyone saying it doesn't look steep and he can't ski/ is skiing way above his ability: The upper half of this run is absolutely insane and the angle doesn't do it justice. It is very much just survival skiing- with better coverage you can get some jump turns in at the beginning, but for the coverage he had that day, sidestepping is the smart option one slip and you tumble down like 100 feet ricocheting off rocks and trees.

This is easily my least favorite video on my channel, it’s my very first one that I threw up without much thought and it ended up becoming my most popular. You’re absolutely right, the GoPro doesn’t do it justice. However I also didn’t bring my best to the table here. I just did a run of this trail a couple weeks ago, planning on throwing it in an upcoming video. I like to think I shredded it up pretty well but that’s for the viewer to decide. However I remember this day, absolutely not the best condition to do this, and it is incredibly steep in person, probably around 40-50 degree pitch if not more
@coakes2010
@coakes2010 5 месяцев назад
@@ThatPinkSuitGuy I mean it's good to be humble and put multiple attempts at the same run under various conditions so someone doesn't see you shredding it on a perfect day and think "ohh that looks so easy for a triple black" and then they end up hurt or stuck in a spot they cant get themself out of

Completely different animal. However it was also harder for me because, just like Chris pointed out, I don’t have the right skies. My skies were not powder ready so I would have to work extra hard to ski the sun baked terrain. However the video I’m working on for next Sunday when I took a drive up to A Basin definitely has some hard shit. The Steep Gullies are gonna be featured in there, absolutely crazy

Reminds me alot of my first time back on skiis in almost 20 years to the day. Went to Kirkwood on rentals and had a great stoner guide there too .... funny coincidence I guess??? Memory is a lil fuzzy hah but one run then he sez you got it bro, let's go to the top, past the skull and crossbones at the lift line. Not really the snow that day as you got so it was more like Vermont then too, alot more snow but firmer. The steepness is just hard to show, but the gulp at the top of Kirkwood was when I saw it was no fall zone..... you go down and you start accelerating immediately. The strange thing Vermont to the western stuff is you want to straight fall line stuff and forget you can remove the steepness with diagonal lines in the big wide bowls out west. Chutes you have to straight line are a whole different level, looking forward to the next.

How does ski patrol check this at end of day?
@ThatPinkSuitGuy
@ThatPinkSuitGuy 7 месяцев назад
I have since found out that the upper cliff is not technically part of the trail, it’s an additional entrance. The actual entrance is a secret little passage onto the glades directly after the cliff. So if I had to guess, that’s what ski patrol actually checks. However, even with the cliff, the trail is definitely triple black worthy in my books, at least compared to the rest of Smuggs trails.
