At Trader Sam’s right now (writing this comment from the bar) with my second Angolada. Would have NEVER ever tried this without your trustworthy recommendation so THANKS!
Your Zombie video just popped up into my feed. Same drink and place that got me into Tiki years ago. Frequently hit the Jungle Bird myself. Keep em up.
Love your videos, you definitely deserve more attention for all the effort that goes into making these. Super entertaining stuff and I love getting recipes from these videos
Hey Jason. Great channel. Been making traditional Tiki for a while, fun do add these Disney versions. Thanks for the recipe for the Zombie batch. DO you have any idea how Disney makes their Grog?
I've never been to Trader Sam's but this drink is a bit hot with the rum and it drowns the juice flavors. It's odd since Disney tends to favor sweet with their drinks. One of the more common version on the net is similar, but uses an ounce of coco real, 1-1/2 oz. of rum and is far more tasty. Still, considering the price of the drink compared to others on the menu, 2-1/2 oz of rum seems very likely. I think you're the first to have the real recipe. Btw, any chance you can share Jock Lindsey's 'Milk and Cookies' Coquito recipe?
The hot zombie has been one of my favorites for the last month or so. For a while there, I was only making hot zombies. Maybe it was this Bay Area rainy season that brought in on, but no ragrets.
I love me a good Zombie. I'm afraid I winced a bit at all the alcohol abuse (spilled booze) happening in this drink. Plus, I know you were doing it for appearances, but you kept using the same 3/4 ounce side of your jigger to pour, even for the 1.5 ounce rums. Would have been nice if you'd turned it over. :) That said, a good tutorial. I'm a Lemon Hart 151 fan myself for this, over the OFTD. But I love the OFTD in a mai tai.
If you're grabbing a bottle of bourbon from Costco you might as well grab some agave nectar as well. Their Kirkland brand agave is good quality and about half the price of other commercial brands. I use it in a lot of cocktails.
This is the old recipe. As I say in the video Trader Sam's switched from the Shrunken Zombie Head to the classical Zombie a while back. If you want the Zombie they currently have on the menu, which is the original Don the Beachcomber recipe I did that here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gIp4ZY0e_KQ.html Cheers!
great video. I picked up Ed Hamilton's Beachbum Berry Navy Grog Mix Rum at 117 proof. The recipe on the back of the bottle calls for much less rum - just an ounce and a half and looks more in line with Don Beach's recipe. It also does not include Allspice. Smuggler's Cove is more aligned with Trader Vic's recipe (as are you) although it calls for demerara syrup vs honey syrup. The Hamilton Navy Grog Rum is excellent and I find myself splitting the difference, dialing the volume of rum back a bit given the high ABV. I agree that there is lots of room to play - a great drink.
I don't remember exactly where I got the Brandy snifters, I think I found a bunch at a thrift store. Those are great places to find interesting glassware on the cheap. Crate and Barrel usually has them pretty inexpensive too. For tiki cocktails try to find the oversized ones, 16oz or bigger. 🤘
Speaking of Allspice Dram, we just had the family Christmas party and I made a few Lion’s Tail cocktails for folks. With bourbon, allspice dram, lime juice and simple it’s rich, seasonal and festive. Punches do go a long way and yours looks fantastic! Crowd pleaser!
Sure, but I am not sure how aging it will go, if you do age it keep it at 20% ABV so the alcohol takes care of any pathogens. If you can, try making it though, total coast of the dairy eggs and sugar for me was like $13 and will taste far and away better than the store bought stuff. Cheers!
