First Corp competition I saw was my freshman year 1978 ,and Madison did this song , I was completely blown away and forever hooked on DCI , they of course won that night , 46 years later I still remember that show .
That night is engraved in my head for ever . The night the blue Deviles were beet for the first time . That season end the crowed new it after the last note .
Flat out best performance ever IMO. I grew up in Whitewater WI, went to high school in the mid-late 80’s and went to DCI Midwest every year because it was in my hometown. I’m biased of course. Had friends in the scouts this year, but you can’t compare today’s DCI to back then. I went to DCI West this year and was so disappointed. Too many props, too much electronic nonsense, not enough horns (I want to feel it in my chest and get goose bumps!!!), not enough, percussion, and too much fluff. As an aside, it’s such a bummer that the cameraman didn’t have a much wider angle at 4:30 in the video - there is an amazing fast moving configuration that unfolds there during the solo that is just mind blowing. You really miss the full impact because the shot is too close. If anyone has a different angle that shows that amazing move, let me know!!!
From a marching standpoint this is only a "so-so" performance. A great many crooked lines and out of sync stepping (watch some of the longer lines and notice the "wave" run from one end to the other).
Here in 2024 to say young Americans shouldn't join the military. They should have to learn an appropriate instrument and march one season of old school summer DCI 💜💫✨
Arrowhead stadium's acoustics was perfect for this type of show. With no disrespect to this fierce horn line, Arrowhead's reverb really adds to the show.
8 "g" contras. better projection than 16 b flat tubas. yeah, i know the talent level is higher now, i'll take the old days for flat out hair raising goosebumps. call me old. (and i can play the bari solo anytime by request)
i actually cant get over the absolute professionalism and talent of drum corps people bro, im just a rising highschooler in band and they're such role models to me😭😭
As long as I've followed DCI (roughly since the 1980s), this is my favorite few moments of any show. I can only imagine how electric it was to be there in person. And such a dramatic finish, when the Scouts came out ahead of Santa Clara and the Blue Devils (who both did a fantastic job in their own right). '88 was just an incredible year for corps.
I regrettably aged out of this corps in 87 and attended finals in KC. Kent Rockow was a freak on the mellophone and Clay Wacholz was a beast on the baritone. Both just normal nice guys with great talent and a pleasure to march with. A magical evening to say the least. SCV and BD were special as well but the Scouts were electric that night!
