Thank you Dr. Fleur and journalist Subuhi Jiwani. The 46 minutes was fascinating and rich with information on the political, sociological and cultural details of the original inhabitants of Mumbai: the East Indians.

East Indians are basically the by-blows of the East India Company/british workers who took the local community women from Vaduval, Aagri and Koli communities as concubines, and had children by them. THEY NEVER MARRIED ANY OF THEM EVER AS THE MISSIONARIES HAD ACCESS TO RECORDS IN ENGLAND AND A SECOND MARRIAGE WAS OUT OF QUESTION FOR THE BRITISH MEN. This transactional exchange between the expats and the locals happened because the British wives could not live in India owing to repeated cholera, typhus and other diseases and hied off to England. When the British and East India company left the shores, they left all the property bestowed upon them during service to their illegitimate cocubines/their children, who they never would want to claim. And that's why these are called East Indians, it's well recorded in the church history. This is why these people have been disavowed by their paternal origins and never received passports nor citizenship. When compared, the Anglo-Indian community, where British men married the women in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and other parts, even in Maharashtra, the Anglo community have British passports, dual citizenship and they also enjoy their distinct identity in India. Same for the Portuguese in Goa, the French in Pondy and others. BUT NOT THE EAST INDIANS! That's why the community has desperately sought to call themselves the 'original' Mobaikars, because they cannot claim their past with any pride nor respect.
Thanks for the very informative interview. During my service in Bombay during the 1970s I had the privilege of working with an East Indian gentleman. He was so helpful and decent in all his actions, I still think of him.
Long story short, a colonial power occupied some parts of India. Some of the occupied heathen convert to the true religion of the colonial power. The neo converts then find ways to separate themselves from the heathen. This difference in life style becomes their culture & we spend 30 mins listening to something that could have been wound up in 5. 😂
Thank you for a very informative interview, perfectly conducted, giving the interview ample time to express himself! My mother and her sisters worked for the British, especially during WWII, and so they wore dresses. Their mother, my grandmother wore the Lugra till her death.
The fact remains that there is no EAST on the west coast of भारत. It a feeble effort to conceal their original identity. It's NO SECRET that the हिंदू from आगरी,कोळी & भंडारी communities which were converted to the Christianity were labelled "" East Indians'"" to conceal their low social hierarchy. The Christian missionaries have condemned the caste system in the सनातन धर्म persued the same practice
Please define east indian. In west Indies people of Indian origin are called east indian. Are the people who worked for East India co. called east indian? 😢
Would like to understand the surnames which have a Portuguese connect. Dsouza, dasilva, Rodriguez etc etc. were the indigenes, maharashtrians or GSBs of goa converted by Portuguese to Christianity and hence the surname? Most speak Marathi or konkani and hence the question.
East Indians are converted by dropping bread into their well.most of them are Brahmins. In hv visited some houses in vasai .their old wooden houses still have hindu inscriptions carved on doors.some of them proudly tell we were hindu Brahmins.
The name of the City has always being Mumbai ... proof? the oldest Indian Gujrathi Newspaper is called Mumbai Samachar/// Britishers Bastardizes it to Bombay same as Thane become THANA , Pune become POONA.. so all those "Indian Born Confused Desis, Brown skinned posh sahebs and Mesahebs please start respecting the local history and stop calling it Bombay or Bambai ( and no I am not a SS or MNS supporter , it is a genuine appeal ) I mean as a NON Tamil I respect Tamils peoples decision to rename Madras to Chennai .. get the point

Isnt it strange that even in rural Bihar and Jharkhand elderly villagers used to call the Sari as Lugga. Today ofcourse the original names are dying out....
