I just learned of the existence of Penikese Island through a noir short story, “Second Chance,” by Elyssa East. The story is about teen boys living in the island’s reformatory. I was curious to see if there is a real island, so I looked at RU-vid and found this delightful video. One can get a free education on the Internet and with public library ebooks! And never leave the house! Btw, it’s ironic that Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) is not at all easy to catch. Thank you for this video! P.S. I just watched the video about the treatment center. When the short story was written, the school was still used as a reformatory for teen boys who’d committed serious crimes but showed remorse, so they weren’t sent to juvie.
This isn’t done right. This is not how to make an ice cream soda. I’ve actually been to a still running (from the 50s) soda jerk bar in a pharmacy in northern michigan and this is wrong. My grandparents who took me to that soda jerk taught me right. The ice cream scoops not blended with syrup need to be put on top of the blended ice cream before the fluid! Lord it’s a chemistry designed dessert! Ice cream scoops then liquid poured in over the backside of a spoon so it cascades over the ice cream and this is imperative as it’s the whole point of the dessert and separates it from a shake or a malt which is what is basically made here! By pouring the carbonated water over the backside of a spoon into the glass cascading over the ice cream it makes the outer layer of the ice cream crunchy ice and the inside even creamier deliciousness! The full scoops rise up with the fluid and you stop when just full and use the spoon to plunge stir around rim of glass to bring the ice cream blend into the carbonated water without submerging your scoop(s) It’s not that complicated but at least this fool didn’t put it in a styrofoam cup but that is not a proper ice cream soda. Nope.
