We believe society needs stories. Film, television and the moving image bring them to life, helping us to connect and understand each other better. We share the stories of yesterday, search for the stories of today, and shape the stories of tomorrow.
That's an absolutely beautiful agricultural tradition that's been lost in Spain. I am starting a hedge around my field using willows as first approach, then I am layering to root beautiful hawthorn trees. Hope to have a proper hedge in 10 years or so!
I am one of the very few people in the country who can lip-read what puppets are saying. The dummy in question is, in fact, Archie Andrews' grandfather and he was talking about his hopes of 'going it alone' in the next summer season.
I don't agree with his comments about the plane crash, but everything is spot on and depressingly, still the case today and is making me realise something both interesting and disturbing that I'd like to get to the bottom of; why does racism seem to be hardwired in white people? My hypothesis is that it comes from early human history when white people first appeared. Early Homosapiens probably viewed white people as something terrible and wrong, probably 'cursed' or something.
These people thought their kids would be simple like them, but their kids were baby boomers who spat in the eye, wrecked our culture in the name of convenience.
I love hedging, work at a trust/hedge fund manager of a considerable fund, putting in puts and calls, have made about $34M so far. Love hedging, no so much dead stumps.
Just watched The Lady in the Van again this evening.... just another brilliant example of his work. This man is indeed a gem.... and he is a Yorkhire man ....!!
The ship portraying San Demetrio in the film was the San Cipriano. She was completing a refit on the Tyne. My Dad was Third Mate and it is him who rings the engine room telegraph. The film was made to raise morale and show the general population what the Merchant Navy was experiencing. Don't forget the Merchant Navy was a civilian manned service. Dad had already been sunk in two other ships before the film was made, first in the trooper Narkunda and the tanker Empire Norseman. He crossed the bar aged 91 in 2012.
Amazing footage. They appear to work with unimaginable weights and enormous workpieces with absolute ease. I can't help but admire the people of that era
1:33 that’s one way of clearing the snow faster and better by means of using a steam engine with a snowplough at the front to shift the snow out of the way
A Ma Souer, and Anatomy of Hell are disturbing, thought provoking and highly interesting French films. I went to see the former on the big screen when it came out, and Anatomy on DVD. Surprised by the use of Bowie on the soundtrack as well.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now It's just a spring clean for the May queen Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on
There is one small disadvantage of these hedges as opposed to fences: they're very hard to move. In NL we had a lot of "ruilverkaveling" where farmers exchanged plots of land to create contiguous bigger ones. These hedges make that very difficult. And perhaps that's actually a good thing.
The advantages of a hedge in terms of environmental value are pretty clear. And how the process works is also obvious. But what's also really obvious, is that this is something only very rich or very poor countries can afford. If we value our wildlife we should really subsidize this, so these hedges can be retained and re-introduced. Just the birds and insects alone getting a safe spot, would be really beneficial.
