Who would have thought? Ian Smith, NZ cricketer/wicketkeeper, would become a familiar rugby & cricket commentator after the game, just like Peter Williams & Grant Nesbitt plus, others.
A brilliant 2-0 series win. Five years later, France would play the test of the ( last ) century. During the 1999 RWC semi-final against New Zealand. France came from behind ( 24-10 ) to beat a very strong All Blacks team 43-31.
How did Ken Rutherford play so many matches? 56 tests with an average of 27, he toured England around 1992, and got hit in the head by Chris Lewis because he couldn't play short bowling. He was nearly killed. I had an argument with a fella who was on my cricket team. I said this fella looks like a dud, how is he captain of a test side, and yer man said, have a bit of respect, he's captain of his country. I can't see the argument in his favour, he wasn't very good. Got over 120 odis as well, average less than 30, scored at less than 4 an over, 2 100s. Played 11 years as a batsman and scored 5 tons.
@pixeltees lots of really good players and a few greats, I liked John Wright, and remember him at Gloucestershire as well, remember the 99 against England, when he was stumped, and New Zealand were 4 runs away from saving the test match. That was a crazy game.
