I understand that many of you dislike his video because of his criticism of Sherrill Milnes. I also share your discomfort with his critique, but it's important to recognize that it's his opinion. Comparing Milnes to others is his right. While I personally think Milnes was exceptional-one of the first Figaros I ever heard-he does sound a bit throaty and less focused in this video compared to other baritones. It’s worth noting that the video features clips of an older Milnes, which might not provide a fair comparison. Milnes in the 1970s was undoubtedly better, but ultimately, his perspective is his own. It's fine to disagree with his assessment, but dismissing his video as "stupid" because of his viewpoint isn't fair.
I saw him at the shrine auditorium when I was a kid we were in the last row lol.now that place is hugebut his voice cut all the way to the top row!!!!!!!!Amazing voice one of the "best"!
While certainly not endowed with the most flowing "bel canto" qualities, Merli's approach is wonderfully masculine and powerful, as later also brought to the piece by the likes of Vickers and Corelli. A superb singer who needs to be remembered far more than he is.
