I grew up in "The City" and my high school (Sacred Heart) was around the corner from Tommy's Joynt. Because we lived in the Richmond District, I took the 38 Geary bus to high school back and forth all week. I walked by Tommy's Joynt daily, and was captivated by the sights, sounds and the delicious aroma coming from this historic building. As a young teenager who still received an allowance from my parents, I could not afford to eat there. In 2023, while visiting San Francisco, I passed by Tommy's Joynt and my first impression was, "Wow, what happened?" The paint and murals on the outside were terribly faded. The inside was not any better--it was dimly lit and was probably untouched in 50 years. I looked at all the cuts of meat in the "Hofbrau Station" by the front door, and all looked dry and not very appetizing. Even the Buffalo Stew looked unappetizing, so I asked the "Chef" (the guy who "carves"/slices the meat and makes your order) what was best. He recommended the Turkey Sandwich. Seeing everything around me, I decided to buy the sandwich "to go" instead of dining in. While he was making my sandwich, I chatted with the "Chef". He told me that he had worked there forever, and that the customers had declined dramatically since their heyday in the 70s. Anyway, I ate the Turkey sandwich 10 minutes later in my hotel room and boy, was I disappointed! I could make a better Turkey Sandwich at home! It was dry--just a few, dry slices of turkey on uninspiring French bread--no pickles, onions, potato chips, etc.--even the mayo was sparse! Definitely not worth the $16 that I paid for it! No wonder regular customers have stopped coming in, only tourists now. So, after half a century of waiting to try Tommy's Joynt, I was left very disappointed and brokenhearted, because I could foresee another of my childhood memories, a San Francisco landmark, going extinct.
It was sold to new owners a year or two back. Not sure what the long term plan is but i can be pretty certain it doesn't involve running a dilapidated restaurant. Probably going to raze it and build a 50 story residential building.
My family lived there for one year. It was my kindergarten year at Gold Trail Elementary School, So ‘65-‘66. We were taking care of the place while the owners were in Japan, for their last tour of duty with the Navy. My mom, Cordelia, started the tradition of serving chicken and dumplings in the dining room. Even at 5 years old, I knew it was a little different than living at our ranch above Lotus. My father, Forrest, was the bartender downstairs on the weekends. I’m sure he embellished the ghost stories for the entertainment of the guests, but it was based on real occurrences.
I was 3 miles away,blasts kept knocking me off my feet. Completely blew the crap out of our neighborhood,every windows in every house was blown out. Everything in the kitchen cabinets was blown out onto the floor. I'll never forget it
Amazing piece of footage. I'd like to ask you if you could get and upload a very bizzare and rare interview of Richard Chase conducted by Robert Ressler. The infamous Mac and cheese interview, in which Chase pulls out a bunch of mac and cheese from his pocket, and offers it to Ressler, asking him to test the food, thinking it was poisoned.
One comment said to look up John Todd Tapes. The research shows he was a conspiracy theorist and satanic panic promoter who preached against witchcraft and was sentenced for a long time for rape before he died.
Unbelievable & Incredible. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" Sagan quote comes often with this amazing Story non belief. It was not taken seriously, NYT courageously denied until that day. All people had was tv images.

Wow, what memories this brings to mind. I was 7 we lived on Sierra Blvd. just down from the “crooked bridge”…. My dad opened all the windows and doors and had us all go outside. We had a BBQ with the neighbors…. We had a few cracked windows and some cracked plaster in our 75 + year old house. I remember packing my little suitcase with as many stuffed animals as possible…. Crazy times for sure!
I still go to Lou's Burgers when I'm in town. Where they talk about the fire station that couldn't go across the street to put out a fire sounds like the North Highlands and Rio Linda fire departments when the line between the districts was Watt Ave
I remember this day quite clearly. We lived in a Citrus Heights, I was nine years old and we started hearing the bombs go off. I remember my dad got a ladder and got up on the roof of the house with binoculars to see what was going on. After he found out it was the Roseville train yard right near the town of Antelope where his friend lived. He got us in the car and decided to head over there to check on him. Yeah, I’m not saying my dad was very bright. Anyway, as we got to Cirby, the police had the roads blocked. They would not let my dad in the area, probably best. So we went home and watched what we could on the news. I heard they found another bomb a few years ago while they were doing some construction.
I'm from the UK and was 2 yrs and 10 months old when this happened so dont remember it but found out about it through yt ect .....im so glad no one lost thier life in this ! BUT IT IS INTERSTING TO SEE that if you look on google maps in 2024 you can see how since then ANTELOPE HAS EXPANDED as a town .....nothing but green fields either side of the goods yard back then ...now if you look in 2024 its ALL urbanised with houses , buissneses right next to the yard ect ....god forbid if anything like this happened again at the roseville yard as the loss of life would be great and the prperty damage would go into the millions of dollars! ...its no wonder ( even now) they are finding unexploded bombs at the yard when upgrading it that are VERY likely from the 1973 explosion that were missed by being buried in the ground from the explosions BUT not detonating! .....Luckily they know the history of the yard ect so if they find some unexploded ordanace they evacute the entire area now !

I miss Tommy's Joynt. And all of San Francisco. Hell, I just miss California as a whole. I was gentrified out many years ago, but my heart aches everyday for my home from over here in the UK.
