@@ceylonyathri What are you talking ? Worshipped what ? Your believe is wrong . 10 - 15 years ago there was no Mary Statue in this place. . This tree has longer history than Christianity reached to this Island by Portugese . This tree is connected to Arabic merchants arival with Pandiya's pearl harvest and trading history with Arabs . Pandiyar bought horse from Arabs and sold pearl to them. This Island has history which connected to Alli Rani . Mathottam port was there near this Island. Thirukketheeswaram was near to this Island. Portugeses destroyed Thirukketheeswaram ancient Shiva temple and used Stones to build their port ( castle ) on the place where Alli kottai ruins previously existed at Mannar Island. This tree and remaining donkeys in this islands are Islamic Arabic merchants historical herritage. There was an old stone inscription under this tree . Now some one removed it and planted Mary stature when Muslims were expelled by LTTE from here in 1990 , when they left this area. There were no houses near to this tree. Stop justifying such a cheap behaviour by religious fanatics. This must be treated as a historical herritage. There should not be religious sympoles . May be they want to earn money to maintain the tree.. But they should not planted the religious statue under a historical tree. You already created a fake story that " ancient people worshipped ". Perhaps the statue of Mary is an added protection to the tree that the kids do not climb the tree and destroy its branches . That the place immidiately looks holy and the tree is respected. I was in Madagascar in may . But I could not visit the avenue of the tree on the western side
