This is the best portrayal of the reaction of the common artistic souls to the madness of society's machine. Assembly line schools and religion that does not teach the children how to cope with the horror of the real world. The horror of war, the madness of coming back home and getting thrown back into your slave job down the mine or wherever. That is assuming you can go back to work after the insanity of war. Those who've lost themselves are medicated with opium and made into drug addicts just so they can sit and breathe and keep breathing. Yep, drugs are good for that; until they leave your system an hour or 2 later and the trauma is still there, but now your sick, your skin crawls, your bones hurt, your muscles spasm and so you are forced, if you want to be able to go on, to have another dose and on and on.... Other vets medicate with alcohol, and other things. This is about the extant of the "help" they get for themselves. Then the ripples this sickness create throughout the families of veterans and society. No one wants to go to an inpatient psychward. Although, telling the stories of the terrible things that happened from begining to end to is pretty much the only thing that helps put one's brain back into some semblance of order. Because where would you put all the horror you've experienced? If you don't find a place for it, it'll just run wild through your thoughts and you'll feel out of control, helpless. The Wall is PURE PEOPLE'S HISTORY and a master class on what's wrong with society; in its hatred of anything different and it's disgusting mob mentality. Where the strong/rich think they have the right, no the obligation, to subjugate the weak, different and anyone who can't stand up against this sick malevolent EVIL MACHINE! This machine was created by those in power and has been serviced over the years, the powerful rich have been busy taping up the cracks and hastily shoring up the workings of this machine. They give us credit cards so we can buy our entertainment, but the piles of interest goes to the bank. They give people the idea that they are free and can do and be whatever they want. Then when the machine smashes the person's hopes and dreams, the person is made to think it's because they didn't try hard enough, when in reality the machine was made this way by design and they were never going to give us a chance. Some get by, the vast majority just barely. Leaving scarcely any room for beauty, purity, love, empathy, tolerance, helping your neighbor. Left to their own devices, those in power will continue to add onto the machine throughout time and to use it to subjugate the poor and cull the weak; never allowing real people to grow and prosper in any significant way, but instead we're left with their scraps, the rot and the destruction! So then, how to break the machine so it can never be used again? How to create a new framework that will not end up being run by the same b*stards? Most of all how to heal and help all those millions of people the machine smashed and ripped apart? These are the questions of The Wall, imho.
