She sang this aria (whose music also appears in Barbiere) very early in her career, in a higher key. But, as you can see, the decades didn’t take much of a toll because of her fantastic technique. I’m sure a lot of younger lyric coloraturas would kill to sing so well at age 60.

I saw her ten years later in the Semiramide at the Chicago Lyric. She was just as spectacular. The voice simply flowed out into the huge Lyric auditorium and enveloped you in a great wave of beautiful sound. One could almost feel the walls reverberating to the huge sound.
My God! These were the ones I grew up with (I was 6 when this took place).....their recordings Anyway.....some of them retired in my youth but most were still singing into my adulthood...and one....is ...still....singing.....NOW (2024) PLACIDO.....Opera fans of the 21st century just don't understand that singers like Nilsson ever existed. She could bring down the house every time. It is a marvelous debate as to from 1960 to her retirement, if Nilsson was the definitive Isolde, Brunhilde, Turandot, Salome and Elektra ALL......
She had the most unique voice and technique!! What a tremendous power in the upper register! Thank you for posting this with the words-I really enjoyed this.

Fatta salva la sua grandezza artistica e canora, mi pare evidente che abbia cercato e ancora cerchi ispirazione nella Callas, al momento molto meno di quando all'inizio portava la voce in risonanza piuttosto nasale. Forse per acquistare un timbro più grave del suo personale, magnifico e puro timbro lirico.
