In Australia it was once easy to buy a block of land, 5 acres or so and pretty cheaply too, but now, the Government has crown land that's not for sale and that crown land is all over, there is no shortage of land instead we have the housing bubble that never burst like it did in the US, instead it kept growing here, Australia is the most sparsely populated place on earth, but the land value, pfft that's so expansive, it's a million for a dump in a rough part of town, but I can't get land anywhere else, except maybe if I somehow got some specialized employment in some country town where it's 3 days drive to get to the closest city, a lot people have invested in land and houses and they don't want it to lose value, they don't even want to need to rent a house they own they want the value to keep going up, the average number of properties with homes on them that politicians have each, is 7, they are not about to cut back on the tax brakes that the investment property owners have, they benefit, I'm surprised it's not like that over there, here it's crazy but we have a lot of the types of people in power that think about tomorrow, but just the morning and they only start when it's 11:59 PM.

Common sense isn't common these days, at least not on line, This video was really fascinating, thank you for the video it isn't difficult to hear the truth in your words and I want to thank you for this, I do have a lot of questions but I'll try not to go on to long, I've noticed that driftwood has a rigid quality and very dry when it's been in the ocean water for some period of time, does it help to soak wood in salty water for a few weeks make the drying process quicker once you take the lumber from the water to dry?

Question for any who can answer. On our farm we have about 25 acres of mixed hardwoods, no pine or fur. All our timber is straight and has been used on the barn. What wood should I use? Basically have every hardwood there is in the US, located in Ohio.

You let us know what the dovetail angles are? Also, how space extra at the various dims. Presumably you’re going to hammer side wedges into the two faces on assembly. As this is a tie beam, we can assume these dovetails are floor joists.

Awesome video BTW! You said in this video "you could NOT use this joint unless it sits over a post". Is there a better scarf joint if you are working on a hobby project and need to lengthen a 3/4 in Thick x 2.5 in. X 40 in solid Pine board and add on 20 in of same species PIne to make it 60 in? I will add that the project I am working on is not a "life or death" situation if it fails or breaks in the future. I "could" go out and by the correct length but I would like to "try" to make this joint because it would be a fun project. Incidentally, it is for my "lovely" neighbor's dog ramp so "Bella" can get up on the bed at night.

Yeah, yeah, yea, but how you get the sound to match up with the slowmo. For the nailing it’s just normal nail gun sound spaced to the video but for drilling and other stuff that’s not a single impact the length of sound will not match the length of video. Maybe it just an editing tool. Anyway back to eating timber framing.

If timber framing with green lumber, it looks like the slot-based system would work better, as a 6x6 post will shrink a bit in width & thickness. When using the metal blade as a template for drilling the holes, don't you need to accommodate for the 1" plate? Seems like it would offset the holes. Thanks for the video!

this is old school timber framing or post and beam with a scientific explanation. Been going on for centuries. Knowing your materials and how they age, dry shrink, expand is key. Why dissimilar woods were used like trenails made from locust or iron wood while timbers where typically made from softer woods like pine or hemlock. As they would shrink and seize onto the trenail or peg, holding into place. wood even steel moves much more than most people know. especially under heat and humidity. Why they say structures "breathe" They expand and contract as environment changes from summer to winter or sunrise to sunset. Quality of timber, how it's milled and how green it is are crucial. old school just looked at it. Rain to draught.
