To take the fan out you just take off the two screws or bolts. One on the left and one on the right side of the fan shroud. Then you can lift it up enough to get the fan out. It will clear the generator stand. No need to take off the manifolds.

if you insert the tool between seal and shaft you can easily damage the shaft neck surface, so new seal will leak again.

Be very very careful when removing that clip with screw driver like that. It can snap and travel with the speed of bullet toward your eye. So please, please wear goggle. So yes, very simple task but very dangerous as well :)

Thanks for the video. One tip for others; the pin grinding was not necessary. If you slide the door along about half way open there's a gap in the top of the track and the hinge assembly will lift straight out of the track at that point. Just get a milk crate and a block of wood to support the rear end of the door whilst it's off the track. Then you can remove from the nut and the cam from the hinge easily. Actually you remove the whole hinge and give it a good clean up and lube.

Good information here. I am replacing my seal on an early 62 beetle soon and your tips will help me. I am replacing it with one from so cal parts that has a sleeve for throwout bearing to ride on. Ive been told that you have to use the pressure plate without the ring as it is the later style.

Quick question, in order to just change the generator brushes, can I just loosen the generator strap and also remove the 4 bolts of the assembly and turn the generator unit to gain an easy access to the bottom brush? Thank You, great video!!!

I have a 36 mm fan bolt from hell. While trying to take it off the front nut came off instead. After seeing the middle continued to spin we realized the woodruff key was missing. Got a new one and tried again. I think we shaved off the woodruff key trying so hard to get this loose. I'm about to lose my stinking mind.
