this is a war grave leave the log book stay you broke the law do not take nothing out from inside of the ship (NOTHING FROM THE SHIP NOTHING) may they rest in peace amen
Once you have established that this is the sub your looking for, the wreck is established as a war grave. You filming war dead, is disgusting. No respect, you should have left them be. Shame on you, no moral fibre, or respect, selling the souls of war dead for your own advancement. God bless, sweet dreams.
the assumption that the German u-boat commander was acting the way he did because he lusted for a knight's cross only makes sense if he never received the order to stop all hostile actions. Only if he could believe the war was still going on he could count on such decorations. But then the sinking of a small coal freighter doesn't fit into that picture. I believe he was following his initial orders to head to a certain area and attack targets of opportunity. Since he rarely had the opportunity due to heavy allied cover he sunk that freighter. He would have even rammed a sailing vessel like so many other commanders did. One thing I didn't like was the disturbing of a war grave which this German wreck clearly is. I am sure that boat crew didn't act on behalf on their government by searching for the ship's logs. Also the way the took risks while diving a boat full of the remains of fallen soldiers doesn't speak for the protagonists of the last part of this film.
I love history. The only thing about this that I find odd ... I thought that even tho it was a German UBoat ... being sunk ... it would be considered a war grave and therefore should not have been entered.
Glad you enjoyed the documentary. These wrecks are considered war graves but not back when these dives took place. Also Captain Bill is an US ARmy vet and was careful not to disturb any remains.
My Great Uncle Captain Charles Prior, was the Captain of the SS Blackpoint, the last civilian ship torpedoed in the war, and torpedoed by U-853. I am happy only 12 men perished, on the SS Blackpoint, and sad that the U-853 was destroyed with all it's crew. Why couldn't they have just honored the orders to stand down, and return home??
Hi captain bill actually met your uncle when he visited bill at his house. Bill also has some interview footage never seen with your uncle. If he could get in touch with you he would be happy to share it
Considering after U-853 left Norway and no communication was ever reported, simple radio failure would explain them never receiving the 'stand down' order. That's why the log is so important, it could answer this question ... ^v^
Do you disturb their grave and bring them home or leave we'll enough alone. I think that because they should have been on their way home only for the new captains selfish decision. Let their families decide. RIP🌹😔 ☘️
Wanting an Iron Cross is what doomed U-352 also. I was to dive this about 20 years but the Captain died on a NJ wreck and the family canx the remaining trips :( Since then my wife's medical issues have prevented me from returning
I see the video has been here for two years… Well it's incredible to watch I never thought anyone would board the submarine. I was wrong. Talk about brave men to squeeze through. I was on the edge of my seat thinking they're crazy. Well if you're still out here thanks for sharing this video. I'll never forget because seeing the board that submarine just blew me away. Take care okay and thank you
That is awesome. I lived on the Alvei in spring 2018 while in dry dock in Brisbane. Awesome experience, would love to sail on her on day. She's looking good
It is so wonderful in a sad and harrowing way to know, that the men who operated these boats were a bunch of basically high school and college aged kids. To be 24 years of age and head into the Atlantic Ocean in a 70m long metal tube, commanding a crew of boys on both sides of 20yo, knowing that the enemy is getting better and better countering your tactics by every month that passes... I can't imagine.
Incredible, didn't know about this attack so late in the war, what a waste of lives, there was no need for more killing after Hitler commited suicide and Admiral Donïtz ordered to end the hostilities, something tells me that Captain knew that and out of revenge wanted to kill some poor sailors, and doom his crew.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY HAD A CHANCE TO ESCAPE AND IN A RUSH RAN OUT OF AIR BEFORE THEY COULD MOVE OR THE BLAST PUSHED THEM TOGETHER TOWARDS THE ESCAPE HATCH ?
My Father served in The British Merchant Navy during the war. He served in The North Atlantic Convoys, going up to Murmansk in Russia. He said their biggest fear was The U-Boat and The Weather, especially during Winter time.
WW2 UBoat crews took a terrible hiding going about their Navy's business. Three quarters of these young crew members were destined never to return to their home port after a patrol and were never to be seen alive again. Regardless of the country that Submarine crews served, they pulled hardship duty. Recognised by the extra money US submariners were paid over their surface Navy comrades. All hail to the world's submariners all - both past and present.
I worked with a guy that was a tail gunner on a B-17 off the coast of New England during WW2 and said when the bombs dropped he would scrape what he seen,he doesn't know if he ever shot at a sub or a whale.
