Thanks for the reminder regarding cleaning out the sunroof drains. Also, I never gave any thought to spraying the CV joint boots, but I'll be getting on that at the next oil change! Thank you for providing great, common-sense, DIY tips!
Really appreciate the video! Have a 17 F31 with 120k on it now. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned with the exception of what it takes to keep it on the road. Otherwise they are fabulous automobiles, you just have to be prepared to either pay for having them worked on, which is not cheap especially at the dealership or learn how to do it yourself. Looking forward to your DIY videos on how to do these things. Thank you. Liked and subscribed.
Despite having these same problems of leaking oil, coolant and over-heating issues, how is it that BMW engineers refuse to rectify these? It's been going on for decades, not years.
but when you start out in the electrical union you get free training and tools for 5 years and working and getting paid with raises. also your not expected to run around like in flat rate so you can learn and work at a good pace. you get better benefits and pension. once your in your good. then when your a journeyman you get real good pay . the automotive industry today just sucks.
135i, 150k miles, 428xi 100k miles and now i'm diving a 430xi.....tips! 1) every day warm up car before you start driving, use remote start to start the car before you grab your bag and go....that 2 min will allow the oil to move around and the head to come to temperature! in winter a little longer! It's a plastic filled engine....quick heating = damaged parts. 2) clean your engine bay twice a year if not more. Go to a self service car wash....use the high pressure hose to clean the hoods underbelly of "crud" that builds up inside the hood. then turn on the foaming brush and just lay it on top of the engine and allow the foam to pretty much degrease your engine...try to not get any on belts....just turn it on lay it on top of the engine and use your hands to kind of move that foam around so it just slides down the engine and components. again oil + plastic = bad! Then use the foaming brush to clean off the inner fender walls. 3) go under with rubber restore or white lithium or something and hit anything with a bushing.....the engine mounts.....flood them with the stuff...it will help restore them and keep them happy! 4) Before you go though a car wash or you wash your car....grab a can of brake cleaner and just about soak the crap out of your brake pads to keep things free of buildup...that buildup may cause brakes to freeze up and your brake pads will last longer because less crap between then and the disc. 5) Keep your car clean as best as you can. Not easy but do your best. As for interior....grab one of those dust glove things that look like fuzzy mittens.....grabe a bottle of black magic...spray a few squirts on to the glove and massage it into your dash your doors and anything plastic which will get cooked by the sun or frozen by the cold...don't worry it won't cause electrical issues if it gets into the dash. while you are doing that grab a towel soak it in black magic and your door seals and your hood seals heck any seal on the car you can see....soak it in the stuff! 6) if you are an old lady driver like me .....Italian tuneups.....let car warm up to temp.....on ramp to a high way or some hill....you really need a long steep hill......gun it! just give it the beans a few times.....really helps remove the carbon buildup on your pistons and in your exhaust. 7) Enjoy your car! They are amazing vehicles! I loved my 135i and i adore my 430xi, love and respect them and they will love and respect you.
The timing chain, vanos and all that stuff is on the back (transmission side) of the engine. The engine will have to come out when it's time to replace the timing chain guides, fix the oil leaks and work on all that stuff. Enthusiasts who work on their cars at home will not want to do this and because shop labor is so expensive you won't be able to give these cars away when they're 15 years old.
Picked up a 00' TJ 2.5L 4cycl. I believe its only 3speed auto. Will swapping a 4speed make it run less angrier on freeways. Or just swap a 5spd manual ( I dont think they make 5speed auto?) I dyi bimmers but know nothing about the Jeep world.
Thanks for this info. Ive been looking at a 2020 Mini Countryman JCW with the B48 engine. My mechanic is begging me not to buy it and because of videos like this i know why. Shame, Mini keeps popping up on most reliable lists lately.
These are frauds, they want people to over-heat and destroy the engines. Same reason why so many of these car company frauds don't fit engine temp gauge. How can anyone in the right mind build an engine and a car and suddenly take away a vital gauge that has been in operation since the invention of cars? It all comes down to fraud and greed.
Ive been looking at a 2020 Mini Countryman JCW with the B48 engine. Are there aftermarket answers for any of these issues? Does BMW care about their reliability ratings at all? The only reason im considering a BMW product is the Mini showed up on a couple of most reliable lists. Im now thinking BMW must have paid them off.
I just replaced the Oil Filter housing on my Dad’s 118i M sport shadow edition ‘18, 1.5 or the B38 3 Cylinder. Was tempted to change the Plastic coolant pipe that bolts to the block, but they didn’t have one in stock. The Turbo Waste gate linkage is about to start rattling 😊. The dreaded Vanos ticking sound. They’re good engines just need addressing with up-rated parts if possible. P.S a mysterious intermittent EML and reduced power/drivetrain malfunction occurred, but went away after resetting the oil level AGAIN,
They are bullet proof. All of these problematic components are bolted on to the engine block. Oil leaks have been a BMW problem for decades (they have used crappy gaskets since the 1970s - or even earlier), but there is no excuse at all for water pump failures or critical plastic parts failing before 100k miles. There is also no valid reason for an aluminum coolant line to leak at a weld point at ANY mileage - whether that be 40k miles or 400k miles. Long gone are the days of a BMW lasting 200k miles with only basic maintenance
@@pcp2359 I've hard that Mahale or others have made upgraded rubber or vitrol versions. Unsure if that's true. Maybe someone else can comment? Probably only increases the durability a bit given these heat cycles ruin about anything that is rubber or like rubber.
I just dealt with the turbo coolant return line leak and upper radiator hose leak on a 2019 B48 X3 recently at 50k miles. Good to know that I will have to keep my eye on the oil filter housing and heat management module now.
Yeah, will fail most likely. Usual first sign of cracked oil filter housing in these cars is the oil cooler causing significant coolant loss while car is not running. But like.. 750ml overnight let’s say
hello please can you do a video on the causes of rough and stumbling idle on the B48 and also is there anyway to contact you aside the comments .Appreciate all the videos and tips so far
Is it doing that humming noise at all speeds in or just high speed? My 05 qx56 RWD I jacked up my rear I felt no play hmms around 80mph goes away at 75mph drives perfect
Maybe yours is starting to fail. Mine started to hum above 40mph and got louder as I drove faster. I would jack up the rear so both tires are off the ground. put it on jack stands. have someone drive the car with traction control off. listen to the rear wheel bearings with a stethoscope or long flat head screw driver from the inside of the knuckle. see if you can hear the bearing at different speeds.
Yes similar issues. Haven't seen too many of the b38s so not too much experience with them but that 3 cylinder is almost the same as the b48. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips! I had a BMW dealer tell me it’s a bad idea to replace the fluid and filter in a ZF transmission. Same thing with replacing diff fluids. I think they’re crazy. What do you think?
I think the diffs you're totally fine to change the fluid. but for The transmission it really depends on how many miles you have on it at the first trans flush.if its higher milage around 100k then I would say do not change. But if you do it at 40k intervals I think you'll be fine. We usually don't do this at all. It's very rare and seems to work ok, lasting well into the 100k miles even into 200k miles. Personally I wouldn't change it keeping it original. thanks for watching!!
@@TheTownTechnician8993 I’ve got 73000 on it now, and I wouldn’t do a flush. Just fluid replacement and a new filter. Do these transmissions really go 200k on original fluid? That bends my mind!
They used the wrong spark plug. Clearly the coolant spark plug should be manufactured by AC Delco, which stands for Absolute Coolant Delivery Company. Keep your BMW all ACDelco!
Great content 👌 👏 Question...looking at a few bmw's.. Thoughts on the new m2 with the s58 motor🤔 & also m240i/ 340i xdrive with b58.. last Question, do you see any common xdrive failures, is rwd better choice for reliability .it would be a second fun car..thanks again for the great content 👌 👍
Are the S 58 in the B 58 are definitely beasts. They could take a lot. If it’s your second car and you don’t live in a area that gets a lot of snow, I would get the rear wheel drive. The X drives could need more maintenance and other components that fail in the future. Thanks for watching appreciate the comment!
Great video. I actually had this replaced recently along with my oil filter housing and the hoses connecting the two. However now I'm getting a code (20A105) and my ac doesn't work right anymore. I hear it kicking on and off over and over again and it doesn't stay cold for longer than a few minutes. Any idea whats causing this issue?
I’d have to look into it a bit more. Depending on the year you may have a small coolant reservoir next to the big one and it feeds the coolant cooled condenser. If the coolant is low, it may not work as well. Thanks for watching! I’ll try to look into that and get back to you!
@@TheTownTechnician8993 I really appreciate the response. Mine is a 2018 340i xdrive manual transmission. Also I do have a smaller expansion tank that I did notice was low on coolant but I refilled it. I the level dropped a few times after that but has remained at the correct level for weeks now.
@@TheTownTechnician8993 hey just an update so you don't waste your time. Issue has been solved 👌 my mechanic left the plug for the pump under the secondary reservoir unplugged. It was as simple as that... lol
0:16 Great Channel and informative content from a tech perspective - you’ve reached the UK ! Welcome you considering a review on 330d M340d 2020 > on models what to look out for / issues.thanks
If my bmw 430i 2018 is imported from US to EU and has a sulev b48 and 58k ml. Is the warranty also available here or is these extended warranties only US based? Thank you!
Hello! thanks for the comment! I believe it is specific to location but something’s may be able to transfer. I would want to double check for you and get back to you. You could also call the dealership give them your vin and they can let you know. Thanks for watching!
